Maybe you are an average student. 1.. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how.

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule(时间表) of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 2.. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study.Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class.3.. Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day and read that material.4.. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you'll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be over worried.

A medical study has shown that excess(过度的)coffee drinking could cause heart attacks in people who do not metabolize(使新陈代谢)caffeine fast enough.

The study, published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association, says an enzyme()that metabolizes caffeine in the liver works differently in some people, depending on the makeup of the gene(基因). People who have a slow version (版本)of the enzyme are at a greater risk(风险)of a heart attack when they drink more coffee. The risk had something to do with a person's age and how many cups of coffee he drinks.

The team from the University of Toronto in Canada studied 4,024 people living in coffeerich Costa Rica between 1994 and 2004, of whom half suffered nonfatal(非致命的)heart attacks. They found slightly more than half had the slow version of the gene, while the rest had the fast form.

Two to three cups of coffee a day increased the possibilities of a heart attack by 36 percent for those with the slowacting gene and four or more cups a day lifted it by 64 percent.

But those under 50 who had the fast version of the gene had a lower risk of heart disease, even with four or more cups a day.

Those with the fastacting gene who drank two to three cups of coffee a day had 22 percent reduced possibilities of having a heart attack, but drinking four or more cups a day only lessened the risk by 1 percent. Scientists recommend limiting coffee consumption(消耗量)to within four cups a day.

When I was a little girl, I remember that when my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer, so we would have time for a conversation with each other. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family.

I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was to busy in those days.

Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend.

One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call. My father was in the hospital. Immediately I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams.

After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day.

Recently some American scientists have given a useful sincere piece of advice to people in industrialized nations that they would be much healthier if they ate more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago.

The scientists say that the human body has changed very little since humans first appeared on the earth, but the way we live has changed greatly. Our body has not been able to deal with (处理,对付)these changes in life style and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times, so they are called “ diseases of civilization”. Many cancers and diseases of the blood system, including heart attacks and strokes (中风) are examples of such diseases.

Scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol (酒精) or tobacco (烟草), probably none. Ancient people also got a great deal of physical exercise, but a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today.

Stone-age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic or tame ones (家畜). They also ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They didn’t have milk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. But today, we eat a large amount of these. We eat six times more salt than our remote ancestors (祖先). We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein (蛋白质) and much less vitamin C.

People today probably do not want to live the way people thousands of years ago did, but scientists say that we would be much healthier if we ate much the same way as remote ancestors did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food.

1.According to the passage, people in industrialized nations would be much healthier if they ate___________.

A. more food than humans living 10,000 years ago did.

B. as much food as humans living 10,000 years ago did

C. more kinds of food eaten by people living over 10,000 years ago.

D. more of the same kind of food eaten by people over 10,000 years ago.

2.New kinds of sicknesses have been found because __________.

A. the human body has changed compared with humans who first appeared on the earth.

B. the way we live has changed a little.

C. our body can’t deal with the changes in life style.

D. the way we live today is proper for the human body.

3.What is the main cause that people suffer from a lot of new sicknesses?

A. Ancient people did a great deal of physical exercise.

B. People today have a lot of alcohol.

C. People today have more tobacco.

D. Food today is quite different from that of ancient times.

4.According to some scientists , Stone-age people were much healthier than people today because they ate a lot of _____________.

A. milk and other dairy products.    B. wild animals, fresh wild vegetables and fruits.

C. salt and sugar    D. grain foods
