On April 14th，2010，my entire life changed in an instant．One moment I was joyfully riding through the sunshine．The next moment，metal，flesh and bone were spreading against the pavement in a thunderous crash．Another cyclist，biking carelessly，had cut me off and sent me supermanning toward oncoming traffic．
As if to symbolize the accident that had hit my life，another disaster also occurred on April 14th，2010．It cost the airline industry＄l.7 billion．Ten million travelers were stuck for days．Economies all over the world were disturbed．This was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull，one of Iceland's many volcanoes．
However，volcanoes are not all bad．In fact，they are necessary．They are responsible for the birth of new earth，and for the creation of rich soil．This eruption gave off 0.15 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily．But cancelling 48% of the world’s flight travel saved about 2.8 million tons of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere，temporarily decreasing our carbon footprint．
Similarly，the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I never would have realized．I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations．
In 1973，another Icelandic volcano，Eldfell，broke out．Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path．After their plan worked，they used the geothermal （地热） energy for the next 15years to heat their homes．A good example of life bringing lemons，and making lemonade! One must move on from misfortunes，focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future．
I ran from April 14th，2010，to every kind of escape．Eventually I ended up in university for a new-found love in Earth sciences．

In this fast-changing and competitive world, it’s only natural that people are seeking a spiritual anchor. However, some would compare foxi with “demotivational culture” - a phrase that describes young people who feel aimless and powerless. They say that foxi actually reflects the reality that young people are losing their will to fight. They are pretending to keep a healthy and wise attitude toward failure simply because they’re incapable of succeeding.
But no matter what, there is one thing that “Buddhist youngsters” should keep in mind: You may want to keep a calm mindset regarding failure, but you should also be passionate about school, work and life. In 1869, the Smiley family purchased an area of land about 100 miles north of New York City. Over time, some of their property and much of the surrounding landscape became the Mohonk Preserve, which has since grown to 8, 000 acres and attracts visitors and rock climbers.
But the Mohonk Preserve also has a long scientific legacy. In the 1930s, Dan Smiley, a descendent of the original owners, began keeping track of the plants and animals that lived in the area.
Megan Napoli is a research ecologist with the Mohonk Preserve in New York. She thinks Smiley’s efforts produced a rare long-term data set of observations, which is useful for studying the impacts of climate change. For instance, other research has shown that songbirds are migrating north earlier and earlier in the spring.
It’s important for the birds to arrive at the proper time in the spring, because they need to time their arrival with the insect emergence. So they need to be here to establish their nesting sites, lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, they have their baby birds, so they need to time it when the insects are most abundant.
Napoli has begun analyzing about 76,000 observations of songbird migration dates collected by Smiley and his team to see if they, too, show that climate change has altered the timing of migrations. Her results suggest that they do.
Napoli found that short-distance migrants that spend their winters in the southern U. S. now arrive an average of eleven days earlier than they did in the 1930s. Long-distance migrants that overwinter in the tropics arrive roughly a week earlier. Napoli presented her results at a recent Ecological Society of America meeting in Portland, Oregon.
