Many countries have traditional dishes, ...

Many countries have traditional dishes, made with special ingredients and prepared in a certain way. 1., and when tourists visit, these are the foods they want to try. But why are some foods more popular than others in certain areas?

Traditional ingredients

Typical recipes (菜谱) are usually made with native plant and animal products. For example, Korean dishes often include rice and soybeans because both plants are native to East Asia and grow well in hot, wet areas. In contrast, wheat grows well in drier areas, like the Middle East, where bread is a common staple food.2., whereas inland cuisines tend to use more meat from farm animals.

Food preservation

Local cuisines often depend on how people traditionally prepared food for storage. In warm weather, meat and fish can go off quickly, so they must be cooked right away or preserved for later. 3., for that reason, modern Norwegian cuisine includes many smoked foods.

Cooking techniques

4.. In China, people often fry food in a deep metal pan or steam it in a basket over hot water. In Morocco, people cook traditional dishes in a special pot called a tajine. And some local dishes aren’t cooked at all.

Imported (进口的) ingredients

Sometimes local cuisines include ingredients that originally came from another place. 5., while many Russian dishes are made with potatoes. However, all of these ingredients were brought to Europe from South America in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. But now they are common around the world.

A. Seafood is often a key ingredient in coastal areas

B. There is a danger that local food traditions will be lost

C. Many different cooking techniques are used around the world

D. For example, Italian dishes often include tomatoes and peppers.

E. These local dishes can become symbols of a place and its culture.

F. Nowadays, we can buy food products from all around the world

G. In Norway, the Vikings used to “cure” meat and fish by smoking them over a fire

Boomerang children who return to live with their parents after university can be good for families, leading to closer, more supportive relationships and increased contact between the generations, a study has found.

The findings disagree with the research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a significant worsening in their parents’ quality of life and wellbeing.

The young adults taking part in the study were “more positive than might have been expected” about moving back home – the shame is reduced as so many of their friends are in the same position, and they acknowledged the benefits of their parents’ financial and emotional support. Daughters were happier than sons, often getting back easily to teenage patterns of behavior, the study found.

Parents on the whole were more uncertain, expressing concern about how they can arrange and manage it if their children continue to live with them. But they acknowledged that things were different for graduates today, who leave university with huge debts and fewer job opportunities.

The families participated in the study were middle-class and were more likely to view the achievement of adult independence for their children as a “family project”. Parents accepted that their children needed support as university students and then as graduates returning home, as they tried to find jobs paying enough to enable them to move out or even afford their own house.

“However,” the study says, “many parents and a little over half the graduates report day-to-day tensions (矛盾) about the prospects of achieving adult independence, which in a few extreme situations came close to conflict”.

Areas of disagreement included housework, money and social life. While parents were willing to help, they also wanted different relationships from those they had with their own parents, and continuing to support their adult children allowed them to remain close.

1.What is the finding of the earlier research?

A. Boomerang children made their parents happier.

B. The parents were looking forward to their children’s return.

C. The parents’ quality of life was not as good as before.

D. Boomerang children never did any housework.

2.The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 may be best replaced by ___________.

A. cause B. gain

C. arise D. allow

3.What is the attitude of the college graduates towards returning home?

A. They are ashamed of turning to their parents for help.

B. They are glad that they could come back.

C. They are doubtful about whether they should return.

D. They are proud to be independent from the family.

4.What can be inferred as the reason for the “boomerang children” phenomenon (现象)?

A. The children want to keep in closer touch with their parents.

B. The parents are willing to provide support to their children.

C. It is harder for the children to land a satisfying job.

D. There is more housework needed to be done by the children.

Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954 to a Mexican American family. As the only girl in a family of seven children, she often felt like she had “seven fathers,” because her six brothers, as well as her father, tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated (躲避) into books. Despite her love of reading, she did not do well in elementary school because she was too shy to participate.

In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher, Cisneros improved her grades and worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college because he thought it would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college, but instead of searching for a husband, she found a teacher who helped her join the famous graduate writing program at the University of Iowa. At the university’s Writers’ Workshop, however, she felt lonelya Mexican American from a poor neighborhood among students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find her “creative voice”.

“It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired a voice. I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didn’t think it had anything to do with why I felt so much imbalance in my life, but it had everything to do with it! That’s when I decided I would write about something my classmates couldn’t write about.”

Cisneros published her first work, The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The book talks about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago, much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and has been used in classes from high school to graduate school level. Since then, Cisneros has published several books of poetry, a children’s book, and a short-story collection.

1.What can we know about Cisneros in her childhood?

A. Her brothers disliked her.

B. She felt herself a nobody.

C. She was too shy to go to school.

D. She did not meet any good teachers.

2.The graduate program gave Cisneros a chance to ________.

A. run away from her family B. develop her writing style

C. make a lot of friends D. search for a husband

3.According to Cisneros, what was the key factor in her success?

A. Her childhood experience.

B. Her training in the Workshop.

C. Her feeling of being different.

D. Her early years in college.

4.What do we learn about The House on Mango Street?

A. It enjoys great popularity among students.

C. It wasn’t a success as it was written in Spanish.

In Africa, Christmas Day begins with groups of carolers (欢唱颂歌的人) walking to and from through the village, along the roadway, by the houses of the missionaries (传教士), singing the lovely carols known to the world around. Often people may be awakened by a group of carolers beginning to gather at the house of worship(敬神活动).
