A new study shows students who write not...

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑)

Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度)But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.

Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes “mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said.

In the first experimentstudents were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual notetaking skills. Thirty minutes after the talkthey were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.

The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. Howeverthe typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.

The researchers' report said“While more notes are beneficialif the notes are taken mindlesslyas is more likely the case on a laptopthe benefit disappears.”

In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memorystudents took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This timethe students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.

These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understandingbut that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

If volunteering begins at an early age, it can become part of a child’s life — something he or she may just expect and want to do. It can teach them:

A sense of responsibility (责任感). By volunteering, children and teens learn how to be on time for a job, do their best, and be proud of the results. And they also learn that, in the end, we are responsible for the well-being of our whole community (社区).

The knowledge that one person can make a difference. A wonderful message for a child is that he or she is important enough to have an effort on someone or something else.

The benefit of sacrifice (奉献的好处). By giving up a toy to a less fortunate child, a child learns that it’s good to sacrifice sometimes. Cutting back on playing time to help clean up a street tells kids that there are important things other than ourselves and our needs.

Tolerance (容忍). Working in community service can bring kids and teens in touch with people of different backgrounds, abilities, ages, and education. They will likely find that even the most diverse people can be united by common values.

Job skills. Community service can help young people decide on their future careers. Learning to work as a team member, taking on leadership roles, setting project goals — these are all skills that can be learned by volunteering and will serve a child well in any future career.

How to fill free time wisely. If a child isn’t interested in traditional after-school activities, community service can be a wonderful choice.

A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eye. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after work so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally forgot about it.

Later the boy lost his way on the street. When the son was found missing, the mother hurried to look for him, but she didn't find him. The mother felt very sad and didn't know how to face her husband.

When the father went to the police station after hearing that the son was missing, he looked at his wife and said just four words. What do you think the four words were? The husband just said “I love you, darling.”

The son was missing. If she had picked him up earlier, this would not have happened. There is no point in blaming (责备) anyone. His wife had also lost her only child. What his wife needed at that moment was comfort and understanding from her husband. That is what the husband gave his wife. Several weeks later, with the help of the police, the couple finally found their lost son. The family's relationship became stronger over that time.

Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your unwillingness to forgive, selfishness, and fears and you will find the world is much more wonderful.

A.A person who always has a sweet smile in their opinion.

2.Why didn't the father pick the boy up himself?

A.He was very lazy. B.He was too tired to do it.

C.He forgot to pick him up. D.He thought the mother had picked him up.

3.What do you think of the husband?

A.Warm-hearted. B.Careful.
