If you feel depressed (消沉的), it’s best to do something about it—depression doesn’t just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor, here are four things you can do to feel better.

Exercise. Take a 15-to-30-minute walk every day—or dance and bike if you prefer.1.But make yourself do it anyway. Once you get in the exercise habit, it won’t take long to notice a difference in your mood.

Provide yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite (食欲). One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat.2.So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don’t feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going).

Find out troubles. 3.When you know what’s got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to receive some understanding. If there’s no one to tell, pouring your heart out to a journal works just as well.

4.Depression affects a person’s thoughts, making everything seem unhappy and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, and then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths or gifts.

Most of all, don’t forget to be patient with yourself. 5.

A. Look on the bright side.

B. Take action to solve problems.

C. Depression takes time to heal.

D. Proper nutrition can affect a person’s mood and energy.

E. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active.

F. Try to make out any situations that have contributed to your depression.

G. With depression, a person’s creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked.

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.

If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.

Communication begins with the concerns of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore everyone. Even if you just say “Hi” and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.

If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary. It would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表达)of information, means of communication such as a letter or a message”. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it's Just by writing a note.

When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse.

This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident go. Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.

Communication isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, tell the other person how you feel-listening is the key factor to communication.

1.In the writers view, dealing with parents is__________than with children.

A.more difficult B.easier

C.more uninteresting D.more interesting

2.The main idea of the second paragraph is____________ .

A.the importance of friendship

B.to make your feeling known to others

C.the importance of communication

D.the disagreement between generations

3.The example in this passage proves that____________ .

A.Sophie is very polite to her parents

B.Sophie's parents are willing to listen to her

C.explanation is the best way to solve a problem

D.communication is the solution (解决办法) to misunderstanding

4.All the following statements are correct except ____________.

A.If you don’t agree with others, you'd better let them know

B.It is better to say “Hi” to others than say nothing

C.If you are not able to communicate, walk away

D.Communication is a two-way deal

Dogs may help save the day in the Philippines, as they use their noses to smell out survivors buried by Friday’s mudslide (泥石流). The team of dogs arrived in the Philippines from Spain, and this Tuesday they were just beginning their work. Search officials told CNN they hope the recent rain will wash away the smell of rescue teams so the dogs can do their job more accurately.

The dogs were brought in after sound equipment found sounds coming from deep inside the ruins, at a place where a school stood before the mudslide covered it. The sounds could mean people are still alive under all the mud or it could just be the earth resettling.

On Monday, rescue workers worked at the school site until three in the morning, trying to locate survivors, and they will begin digging again as soon as the dogs think they find someone.

Human teams from the US, Malaysia, and Australia are all trying to help, too. But so far they have yet to locate any survivors. Rescue workers told CNN that an earlier report that 50 survivors had been found was false.

How did all that mud bury the village in the first place? On Friday, 2,400-foot Mt Kanabag turned into a mudslide after two weeks of constant rain weakened it. The mountain crumbled and the mud fell onto the village Guinsaugon, burying the 1,800 people who lived there. Out of the 300 houses in the village, only 3 were not covered by the mud. The village is on a southern Philippine Island called Levte. Rescue efforts have been difficult because the village takes six hours to reach from the nearest airport. Hopefully, the dogs can help their human friends find survivors.

1.According to the search officials’ words in the first paragraph, we can learn that ________.

A.the smell of rescue teams can disturb the dogs

B.the dogs can follow the smell of rescue teams

C.the dogs can’t smell the rescue teams

D.the dogs can tell the smells of buried people and rescue teams apart

2.The main purpose of this passage is probably ________.

A.to show the way to rescue the victims in the ruins

B.to introduce the instruments to save victims in a disaster

C.to tell readers that dogs can smell out victims buried in the ruins

D.to show how to train dogs to save victims in a mudslide

3.How many survivors have been found by the dogs?

A.50. B.Only a few. C.1, 800. D.None.

4.The reason why the rescue work wasn’t going smoothly was probably that ________.

A.the rain was heavy

B.so many people were buried

C.it was difficult to reach the village

D.these is little chance to save the survivors

When I worked in a large city, passing by someone who was homeless wasn’t an uncommon sight. The difficult situation of those I saw touched me deeply.

I felt I must do something, and, as a single mother, I decided to come up with a plan that fitted my limited budget. I began by setting aside five to ten dollars and passing them out to those I met on the street each week.

Though a dollar felt like a small amount, I realized how powerful it was. For me, I recognized that those I passed by were people just like me. Sometimes we would joke a bit and smile together. On some occasions, I was able to give more. I don’t know how and if the dollars helped, but I know that the connections we made did.

One day after I had started this weekly practice, I had saved up enough to buy myself a new winter coat. With it around my shoulders, I realized that my old coat could still be put to use by someone who had little or nothing to protect them from the cold. However, at that moment, I felt inspired to pass on this opportunity for kindness. I turned to the salesman who had helped me, and asked if he would feel comfortable taking my old coat, walking to the corner, and offering it to someone in need. Slightly taken aback, he smiled. “I will as soon as I get a break,” he said. “Thanks for being so considerate.”

I can’t help but feel that my experiences with kindness have moved me to pass it on, and in this way, I feel I’ve helped more than just those I pass by on the street. Kindness touches many hearts, and I am grateful for the way it has touched mine.

1.Why did the author decide to come up with a plan?

A.Because she wanted to increase her limited budget.

B.Because she needed to set aside some bills.

C.Because she always passed by some homeless people.

D.Because she wanted to do something for the homeless people.

2.What did the author think of the dollars she gave to those people?

A.It didn’t make sense.

B.It could help them a lot.

C.It might have been a small amount to them.

D.It brought a friendly connection between them.

3.What do the underlined words “taken aback” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?

A.Surprised. B.Satisfied. C.Upset. D.Frightened.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Helping People Who Are Homeless.

B.My Experiences with Kindness.

C.Raising Money to Help Those in Need.

D.My Weekly Practice of Helping Others.
