Do you ever pull your phone out of your ...

Do you ever pull your phone out of your pocketthinking it is vibrating(振动),only to find that it isnˈtThis phenomenonwhich scientists call"phantom(幻觉的)phone vibration"is very commonAround 80% of people surveyed say they have imagined their phones vibrating when they were actually still

Sowhat leads to this universal behaviorAccording to the BBCthe explanation lies in your brainˈs ability to discover signals from the outside worldWhen your phone is in your pocketthere are two possible statesit is either vibrating or notMeanwhileyou also have two possible states of mindthe judgment that the phone is vibratingor that it isnˈtIdeallyyou match the four states correctly

Howeversometimes your brain decides that the results of missing a call are more serious than a"false alarm"Thereforeyou become more sensitive(敏感的) to vibrations so that you donˈt miss anything This is just like the fire alarm in your home---it can be annoying when it goes off in response to just a tiny bit of smokeBut thatˈs a small price to pay compared to a fire really breaking out because the alarm fails to alert youNowyou might still askwhy canˈt our brains just make every judgment correctly without being too sensitive to false signalsThe answer is that your brain bears a heavy burden every day"You get a large amount of sensory(感觉的) information thatˈs coming from your eyesears and skinand you canˈt deal with all that information all the time"Michael Rothberga researcher at Baystate Medical Center in SpringfieldUStold Live Science

For examplethe rustling(沙沙声)of clothing or the growling(咕咕声)of your stomach may both lead your brain to believe that they come from the vibration of your phone-it is like trying to hear your name being called in a noisy room

Soperhaps you should just check your phone whenever you think itˈs vibratingItˈs not too much trouble to do thatis it

However,sometimes your brain decides that the results of missing a call are more serious than a “false alarm".Therefore, you become more sensitive(敏感的) to vibrations so that you don’t miss anything.(然而,有时你的大脑会认为错过一个电话的后果比“误报”更严重。所以,你对振动变得更加敏感,因此你不会错过任何事情)可知,当我们的大脑对错误的信号做出敏感的反应时,电话振动幻觉就会发生。故C选项正确。 2.推理判断题。根据第三段中的This is just like the fire alarm in your home(这就像你家的火灾报警器一样),this指的电话振动幻觉,由此可推知,这个例子是为帮助我们更好地了解手机振动幻觉的原因。故B选项正确。 3.细节理解题。根据第三段中的The answer is that your brain bears a heavy burden every day."You get a large amount of sensory(感觉的) information that’s coming from your eyes, ears and skin, and you can’t deal with all that information all the time,"(答案是你的大脑每天都承受着沉重的负担。“你的眼睛、耳朵和皮肤会产生大量的感觉信息,你不可能一直处理所有这些信息。”)可知,每天脑袋接受信息和处理信息的负荷很重,这是产生手机振动幻觉的主要原因。此题易误选C,C表达的是生活压力大。故D选项正确。 4.细节理解题。根据最后一段中的So,perhaps you should just check your phone whenever you think it's vibrating.(所以,当你认为手机在振动的时候也许你应该检查你的手机),可知,当我们感觉手机在振动时,我们应该检查我们的手机。故B选项正确。

"Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday?" Lindsey whispers to Tori.

With her eyes shining, Tori brags, "You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago."

Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly, Adam Freedman, I can tell you that what they are saying is a not nice and b not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip (闲话).I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.

An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic—breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out—that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.

If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor (传言)can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the "in group". In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority (优越感).

Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do's and don'ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.

The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your "juicy story" might have.
