    China will continue to improve its policies and beef up support to speed up commercial use of the 5G network, an official with the country’s top industry regulator said on Tuesday.

Wen Ku, a spokesman for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the ministry will continue to support the development of the super-fast fifth-generation wireless technology by telecom carriers and encourage local authorities to come up with more support policies.

Chen Zhaoxiong, vice-minister of Industry and Technology, said that the development of the 5G network could give rise to massive opportunities in industrial growth and job creation. The ministry will make continuous efforts to promote the use of 1000Mb broadband connections and expand the coverage of fiber-optical broadband services, he said. Meanwhile, the ministry will upgrade telecom networks and operation systems by the end of November to ensure that mobile phone users nationwide can switch service carriers without changing phone numbers, he said. He explained that it could require substantial (大量的) efforts as it involved the upgrading of operation systems of a total of 1.6 billion users in the country.

In the meantime, a “floor-price” will be set for low-income and elderly populations to further promote mobile networks, he said. In order to better protect the rights of consumers, the number of service packages offered by the telecom carriers will be trimmed(削减)by more than 15 percent this year, according to Wen.     The “24 solar terms” (节气) originated and was firstly used in China. It was created thousands years ago on the basis of practical needs of agriculture. Ancient Chinese people used it to guide agriculture production, special climate signs and even healthy living tips. Last year, the 24 solar terms was added to UNESCO’s world  cultural heritage list.     The FDA is the common name for the Food and Drug Administration. It is a government agency that makes consumer goods safe. It regulates food and the food supply. It also controls diet supplement. The FDA also makes sure that drugs and medical devices are safe and effective.

For drugs and medical machines to be accepted, they must go through a lengthy process. There are many strict tests. First, anything that humans use must be tested on animals. This may take up to 6 years. Then, it must be tested with a few people. Testing on 15 to 20 people can last up to a year and a half. Third, a mid-sized group (100 to 500 people) is used. This often takes two years. Then a large group is tested over 3 years. Of 5,000 drugs discovered, only 5 enter trials. Of that, only one passes on to the market.

Food supplements like ginseng (人参) follow a different path. The FDA does not pre-test them as they do for drugs. The agency only controls these products if they are unsafe but are already being sold. Two exceptions are baby and medical food. Because those that use them are not strong, the FDA is more careful with these products.

Labeling(标签) is a major focus. A label must show what a product is for. For drugs, labels should say the name of the drug and what it is used for. It should also detail who should take it and list any side effects. It needs to detail directions for pregnant women, children, or old people. It also needs to detail safety information.

A Guide to the University

Food

The TWU Cafeteria is open 7a.m. to 8p.m. It serves snacks, drinks and meals. You can pay with cash or your ID cards. You can add meal money to your ID cards at the Front Desk. Even if you do not buy your food in the cafeteria, you can use the tables to eat your lunch, to have meetings and to study with friends.

If you are on campus in the evening or late at night, you can buy snacks, fast food, and drinks in the Lower Café located in the bottom level of the Gouglas Centre. This area is often used for entertainment such as concerts, games or TV watching.

Relaxation

The Globe, located in the bottom level of McMillan Hall, is available for relaxing, studying, cooking, and eating. Monthly activities are held here for all international students. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., closed on Sundays.

Health

Located on the top floor of Douglas Hall, the Wellness Centre is committed to physical health. A doctor and nurse is available if you have health questions or need immediate medical help or personal advice. The cost of this is included in your medical insurance. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:30pm.

Academic Support

All students have access to the Writing Centre on the upper floor of Douglas Hall. Here, qualified volunteers will work with you on written work, grammar, vocabulary, and other academic skills. You can sign up for an appointment on the sign-up sheet outside the door, two 30-minute appointments per week maximum. This service is free.

Transportation

The TWU Express is a shuttle service. The shuttle transports students between campus and the shopping centre, leaving from the Mattson Centre. Operation hours are between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturdays only. Round trip fare is $1.
