On the banks of the canal grew some tall dock leaves. Here a mother duck sat on her nest. She was waiting for her ducklings(小鸭子) to hatch(孵化).

At last the eggs started to crack(破壳). One by one the little ducklings came out of the eggs.

“Cheep! Cheep!”they cried as they saw the big outside world. Soon all the eggs had hatched except one. It was the biggest of all the eggs.

Mother duck sat on the egg a little longer and at last the egg started to crack. Out came the chick.

“Oh dear,” she said, “you're so big and ugly.”

The next day was warm and sunny so the duck took her ducklings down to the water.

One by one the ducklings followed her. Soon they were all swimming. even the big ugly one.

Then they went to the farmyard.

“Stay close to me and watch out for the cat,” Mother duck told her family.

They lived in the yard with the other animals, but the ugly duckling was very unhappy. The other ducks pecked(啄) at him and laughed at him. He wanted to run away as he was so unhappy, and one day he did.

He ran away until he came to the marshes(沼泽) where the wild ducks lived.

He stayed there for two days, feeling very tired and lonely. The wild ducks came and looked at him.

“You're very ugly!” they said and laughed at him.

Poor little ugly duckling! He ran away over the fields and meadows(草地). The wind blew and the duckling was so cold and tired.

It was getting dark and he looked for somewhere to spend the night. Luckily, he found a little house. There was a gap(间隙) in the door and he went inside for some warmth.

An old woman lived in the house. She had a cat which could purr(咕噜咕噜叫) and a hen which laid eggs.

The old woman said, “If you can lay eggs for us, you can stay.” So he stayed but he couldn’t lay eggs.

The cat said to him. “Can you purr?”

“No, ”said the duckling.

Paragraph 1 Winter was coming and the ground was cold and hard. The duckling had nowhere to go and was unhappy very much. Should he go back to his home? He wondered. But then he saw a group of beautiful white swans flying in the sky. "If only I could fly like them, "he thought. What a ridiculous dream it was! He found a hiding place in the mashes, expecting the warmth from the sun. At last he survived the cold winter. Paragraph 2 One day, after he woke up he felt that something strange happened. He suddenly sensed that he had more strength and his wings became large when he ran a few steps. He would fly into the sky. He was puzzled but flew over a lake, where he looked down and saw his figure in the water. He almost fell into the lake because what he saw wasn't that ugly duckling but a beautiful swan. After being laughed at a lot, he could live a happy life now.

Healthy eating is not just what you eat, but how you eat. Here are some tips for you:

Eat with others whenever possible. Eating with other people has numerous benefits, especially for children. 1.  Eating in front of the TV or computer often leads to mindless overeating.

Take time to chew(咀爵) your food and enjoy mealtime. 2. We tend to rush through our meals, forgetting to enjoy the flavor and feel the taste of what is in our mouths.

3. Ask yourself if you are really hungry, or have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty instead of hungry. During the meal, stop eating before you feel full. It actually takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that it has had enough food, so eat slowly.

4. A healthy breakfast can jumpstart your metabolism(新陈代谢), and eating small, healthy meals throughout the day (rather than the standard three large meals) keeps your energy up and your metabolism going.

Avoid eating at night. 5. And then don’t eat for 12-14 hours until breakfast the next morning. Studies suggest that eating only when you’re most active and giving your digestive(消化的) system a long break each day may help to keep fit.

A. Drink plenty of water.

B. Try to have dinner earlier.

C. Be careful when eating out.

D. Eat your food slowly, tasting every bite.

E. Listen to your body.

F. It allows you to follow others’ healthy eating habits.

G. Eat breakfast, and eat smaller meals throughout the day.

It has become a daily routine(常规) for the students on bus No.7 in Arlington, Washington to wave to the “grandma in window”.

Every day for the past five years, you could find the old lady Louise Edlen sitting at her dining room table having breakfast as the kids were passing by. But one day in early October this year she was not found sitting in her usual place.

The kids didn’t see their old friend for a few days. They got worried. Finally, they learned that she had suffered a stroke(中风). “It was kind of heartbreaking to us because she was always there in the past five years,” seventh-grader Axtin Bandewerfhorst said.

But she was upset and was obviously still thinking about the 20 boys and girls who passed by her home every day. The day after the bus driver Carol Mitzelfeld brought a bouquet of flowers from the students to Edlen, the kids looked out of the window to find a sign reading “Thank you”.

“That really made me happy,” 10th-grader Cheyanne Holt said. “It shows how much we mean to her.”

So to welcome Edlen home from the hospital, they made her a sign of their own: a photo of the kids waving from inside the bus.

“Carol told us that a lot of times she even does not remember her daughter’s name, but she always remembers to wave to the kids on the bus,” Bandewerfhorst said. “That made me feel really special.”

Louise’s husband, Dave Elden, said, “The students’ daily move gives her something to look forward to every day.”

Elden has returned home, and is back to waving to the students every day.

1.When does the No. 7 bus pass Louise’s house?

A.In the morning. B.At noon.

C.In the evening. D.At night.

2.Where was the sign reading “Thank You” placed ?

A.In front of the hospital. B.On the school bus.

C.At the gate of the kids’ school. D.In front of the dining room window.

3.Louise felt upset in hospital because ___________.

A.she forgot her daughter’s name B.the kids didn’t visit her
