Daniel Zhang, the former top manager of ...

Daniel Zhang, the former top manager of Alibaba, has larger shoes to fill now. In September last year, he took over the role of chairperson from Jack Ma, who decided to step down after building the $420-billion(十亿) internet business.

Zhang studied finance at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. After graduating from school he worked at a gaming company in Shanghai. The Shanghai native joined Alibaba in 2007 and played a key role in helping to drive Taobao to profit(营利). He is best known for starting the ''Double 11'' shopping festival, which has brought in 50 million yuan in sales during the first festival in 2009 to 268 billion yuan in 2019.

As to leadership style, Zhang is very different from Ma. The latter made a name for himself as an entertainer, dressing up as Michael Jackson at company events. Zhang has kept a much lower profile(低调). ''Ma is a guy with many ideas. He is very, very creative, '' he said in an interview. ''I'm the guy who always wants to put my foot on the ground. '' The young chairperson, however, has never wanted a routine job or a predictable life—a message he gave to students during a 2016 event at his alma mater(母校).

Zhang now has his sights set on helping Alibaba further develop its New Retail strategy, which looks to combine online shopping. ''We strongly believe that brick-and-mortar stores(实体店) can create huge value, but their model needs to be upgraded,'' Zhang said at a conference last year.

You cannot judge a book by looking at its cover! That's what a group of parents and students in Hangzhou has found out this term.

When they came to school in September, the students were shocked to learn that their class teacher was to be a P.E. teacher. How could someone who teaches table tennis and basketball know anything about academics? Their parents were equally worried and pressured the school to replace ''Miss Muscle'' with a ''Miss Brain. '' However, the principal(校长) did not give in to the pressure and now the parents and students are happy that the school firmly insisted.

After three months, the P.E. teacher, whose name is actually Miss Su, has turned out to be a wonderful class teacher. She is intelligent, kind and helpful. She is a good leader who keeps her students active in their studies and participate in school activities. And she has won the parents over with her real caring for their children. In other words, Miss Su, the P. E. teacher, is ''pretty extraordinary. ''

The early negative reaction against Miss Su is an example of bias(偏见). A ''bias'' is wrong in thinking that has an influence on a person's opinions and decisions. For example, in business, tall men are more likely to be bosses. In the United States, anyone who is above 190 centimeters tall can expect to have a higher salary and to get more promotions than his shorter co-workers. Similarly, women have a difficult time climbing the career ladder because their bosses(mostly men!) think that women lack leadership skills and the necessary toughness to make difficult decisions. Neither of these opinions is based on facts or the talents of the individual. They're just bias.

1.What seemed to be the parents' early reaction to Miss Su?

A.They were excited. B.They were amazed.

C.They were worried. D.They were interested.

2.Why is Miss Su considered to be ''pretty extraordinary''?

A.She is an excellent P. E. teacher.

B.She was finally removed.

C.She really cared about her students.

D.The headmaster was proved to be wrong.

3.The examples are given in the last paragraph to show     .

A.tall men are usually excellent B.people are often judged with bias

C.opinions should be based on facts D.women lack leadership skills

4.What's the author's attitude towards the bias?

A.Disagreeable. B.Acceptable.

C.Careless. D.Curious.

Did you toss and turn all night? Did you wake up with a sore neck or a headache? Do you feel like you need a nap(小睡) even though you have slept for eight hours? Just like you, I would wake up in the morning with all of those problems and I couldn't figure out why. Like many people who have trouble getting a good night's sleep, my lack(缺少) of sleep has a bad influence on my life. I wanted to do something about my sleep problems, but nothing that I tried worked.

The pillow(枕头) was the problem

I bought every pillow on the market that promised to give me a better night's sleep. None of them worked. Finally, I decided to invent one myself. I asked everyone I knew what qualities they would like to see in their ''perfect pillow'' and got many responses: ''I'd like a pillow that never goes flat, '' ''I'd like my pillow to stay cool'' and ''I'd like a pillow that adjusts to me regardless of my sleep position. '' I spent the next two years of my life inventing MyPillow.

MyPillow is to change the situation

Flash forward ten years and MyPillow, Mike Lindell’s revolutionary pillow design, has helped five million people improve the quality of their sleep. Lindell has been featured on numerous talk shows, including Fox Business News and Imus in the morning. Lindell and MyPillow have also appeared in feature stories in The New York Times. MyPillow has been selected as the Official Pillow of the U.S. National Sleep Foundation.

Walter's goal in life was become a successful doctor. He knew he had to finish high school first, so he put his heart into her studies—in particular, biology, chemistry and maths. Because he worked hardly at these subjects, Walter became good at it. However, Walter forgot that he needed to master some other subjects beside those he had been chosen. As a result, Walter fails in both English and Chinese in the end of the second school year. But he had to repeat these subjects and he was almost unable to graduate like planned. Walter learned a good lesson from this experience.
