Surfing: It’s Not Just for Boys Anymore

If you asked high school girls to name their favorite sports, most would probably say basketball or volleyball. I happen to be one of the few girls who would   36  : surfing. But isn’t that a boy thing? Some people   37  . Most certainly not.

I started surfing about five years ago and fell in love with the sport on the 38  first day. Riding that first   39  was the best feeling I had ever experienced.

When I try to   40  surfing with other things, I find it very difficult because, in my   41  , there’s nothing like it. It involves body,   42  , and soul. There’s sand between my toes and cool, salt water all   43  us. The feeling I get when I’m surfing across that   44 , becoming one with the   45  , is like I’m weightless.

The one thing I can   46  from surfing and not any other sport is endless challenge. You can never be the “best surfer” because the ocean   47  an uncountable variety of waves that nobody can ever master. The variations of surfing styles are wonderful. Some surfers are free and lowing; others are very aggressive (活跃有力的) and   48  . All of these things attract me to surfing and make it   49  from any other sport.

I’ve   50  to tell every girl I know to do something that people don’t think girls can do. It’s part of being human to advance to new   51  , so shouldn’t it be expected that girls should step up and start   52  the limits of things boys and men used to dominate (主宰)?

There’re women   53  side by side with the President of our country, so why not side by side with the boys   54  the football team or out in the water surfing? Give girls a chance to   55  , and they will.

What is success? I am not going to try to explain success. I think a precise meaning is impossible! Is it winning a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games or winning Wimbledon, or being awarded a Nobel Prize? What else? I believe personal success could be anything at all- it does not have to involve public recognition. Who is more successful? A millionaire who is unhappy, or an unnoticed person, who has led a simple, quiet, sincere and happy life? The simplest definition of success, I think, is “to set out to do something and to succeed in doing it.

The first step on the road to success starts with belief. Believe you can succeed and you will. Achieving success in whatever endeavor(努力)you choose may be the goal of life; because it gives you freedom from worry. Could that be?

Success means different things to every one of us. Some people believe it is measured in financial term; others believe it is helping others rather than helping themselves. However, most people are motivated to a great extend by public recognition. How many people are really happy? How many people are really doing what they want to with their lives? Incidentally, to imagine makes us different from animals.

Most important of all, I believe success is a matter of personal growth. If every day you are developing or growing just a millimeter, I believe one is successful. Just being a slightly better person each day for me is success. I’ve got a very long way to go them!

Finally, always remember success is a process and is not simply a matter of arriving at a destination. It’s the journey that really matters. Success is what you become in the often very difficult and dangerous journey down the river of life.

1.What is personal success according to the author?

A. Winning public recognition

B. Being an unhappy millionaire

3.According to he text, humans are different from animals in_______.

There is no better way to enjoy Scottish traditions than going fishing and tasting a little whisky(威士忌) at a quiet place like the Inverlochy Castle. When Queen Victoria visited there in 1873 she wrote in her diary, “I never saw a lovelier spot,” And she didn't even go fishing.

Scotland is not easily defined. In certain moments, this quiet land of lakes and grass mountains changes before your very eyes. When evening gently sweeps the hillside into orange, the rivers, teeming with fish, can turn into streams of gold. As you settle down with just a people and a basket on the bank of River Orchy, near the Inverlochy Castle, any frustration will float away as gently as the circling water. It's just you and purple, pink, white flowers, a perfect harmony. If you are a new comer to fishing, learning the basics from a fishing guide may leave you with a lifetime's fun. For many, fishing is more than a sport; it is an art.

Scotland offers interesting place where you can rest after a long day's fishing. Set against a wild mountain and hidden behind woodland, the beautiful Inverlochy Castle Hotel below the Nevis is a perfect place to see the beauty of Scotland's mountains. After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first train that came along.

After a few minutes I asked in English of course a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he? Unfortunately, he couldn’t undersold me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters (汉字). He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage (车厢) subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.

In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man wasn’t smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.

All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip.

This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into bad luck.

1.The author decided to take the subway because ________.

A. he believed in his ability to deal with the trip    B. the network covered most of the stops

C. he lived near the city center    D. he had a good impression of its cleanliness

2.Having been shown the room card, the young man ________.

A. still remained puzzled    B. understood the author well

C. answered the author directly    D. pointed at the subway map

3.The author’s purpose of writing this passage is mainly to ________.

A. prove the importance of being careful    B. appreciate the kindness of the young man

C. complain some cultural misunderstanding    D. describe one of his adventurous experiences
