Greetings from China! I’m Li Hua, a student in Sichuan. I’ve been a panda lover since I was a child. About three years ago I was delighted to learn that Baiyun gave birth to her daughter Sulin and I’ve been watching her grow on your website. Now she’s going to be three. I’d like to wish her a happy birthday and to express my thanks to you for your hard work, because of which Sulin and her parents are living a happy and healthy life in the US. By the way, could I have a photo of Sulin taken on her third birthday? Thank you very much in advance.     Nowadays golf is a very popular game around the world and the golf course is usually Perfectly taken care of by the owners. When a golfer plays on any golf course, he or she expects the course has a lot of hazards(障碍区)like sands, woods, and ponds of water. There is one special golf course, though, where along with these hazards that stand still, the player must expect to compete against hundreds of moving hazards. The golf course is on Christmas Island. The island is an area of Australia in the Indian Ocean, the third largest ocean in the world, lying between Africa and Australia. The moving hazards are bright red, four-and-one-half-inch crabs, small creatures with five pairs of legs, carrying a shell.

Over 150 million of these brightly colored crabs live in the island’s rainforests. Every year, starting around November, the crabs migrate(迁徙), that is, they leave the rainforest and make their way to the ocean. They arrive at the coast after one to three weeks. But the males return to the rainforest earlier than the females, who return about half a month later after producing up to 100,000 eggs.

On Christmas Island there is a golf course which was built on the crabs, migration route. During the migration season, there are hundreds of red crabs moving on the course. The rules of the Christmas Island Golf Club say that all players must treat the crabs as they would treat any other hazard. They cannot move them, and they must play around them. If a walking crab happens to knock a ball while it is on the green, hitting it into a hole, the ball is considered “in”.

The golfers must compete against a moving hazard, and actually so must the crabs. People have built roads that run through the crabs’ migration route. People are trying to reduce the number by putting up “Crab Crossing’’ signs and closing certain roads during the migration season.

Bloomy spring days come again, another year of job hunting as well. So fierce is the competition that job hunters must make careful decisions in every aspect. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.

A newspaper said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos(纹身), nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their their appearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.

Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about making or lose money. Most employers care about the personal appearances of their employees, because those people represent the companies to their customers.

As a hiring manager, I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified applicants, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers, Ever though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are.

There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match your preferred employer’s. No company should have to change to satisfy an applicant simply because he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.

1.Which is the newspaper editor’s opinion according to Paragraph 2?

A.People’s appearances carry messages about themselves.

B.Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companies.

C.Applicants with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly treated.

D.Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace.

2.What can be inferred from the text?

A.Hiring managers leave the best impression on their applicants.

B.What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies.

C.Companies sometimes have to change to respect their applicants.

D.Applicants can wear what they themselves prefer for an interview.

3.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A.Hiring Managers Matter B.Appearances Matter

C.Personal Choices Matter D.Employees Matter

4.The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may be      .

A.negative B.positive

C.appreciative D.indifferent
