In my profession as an educator and health care provider, I have worked with numerous children infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages.
Tyler was born infected with HIV and from the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medications to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. Bats often appear in movies and literature as frightening creatures. The animals have even been linked in some cultures to vampires, seeking to attack humans and drink the blood of them. In Washington D. C, researchers are studying how white-nose syndrome is affecting the area's nine species of bats. Some scientists are trapping bats on an island in the middle of the Anacostia River to test for the disease. The group is receiving money to help carry out their studies.
Marco Carvello is with the Washington D. C Government's Department of Energy and Environment. "Scientists are concerned that the disease is continuing to greatly reduce the bat population. The bat deaths are affecting the quality of human life in many ways. Without bats, there is an increase of many insects. And that's only going to get worse over time if some ways can't be found," he said.
One theory is that some bats are no longer returning to caves to avoid getting, sick. This means more of them are now making their way into cities, where contact with humans is more likely Experts advise people to keep away from bats in case they have the disease.
