Then my parents helped uncle prepared lunch. I talked excited with grandma about my study and other things. At 4 o’clock in afternoon, we said goodbye, and went back to home.

It’s a warm summer afternoon. You’re cooking up the catch of the day over a campfire. Suddenly, a few raindrops fall on your arms, and before you know it, the sky is opened up. Then you hear what sounds like thunder in the distance. What should you do? Your tent is close by and would offer shelter(栖身地) from the pouring rain. There’s a campfire picnic shelter a few minutes down the path. And then you remember that your car is parked down the road. What’s your safest choice to make sure you and your families are safe?

It’s a common question for many hikers and campers, especially when they’re camping during summer months. Heading to your car is almost always the safest choice. Your tent and a picnic shelter will keep you dry, but they offer little or no protection against lightning. Your car, on the other hand, will keep you dry and protect you from lightning strikes. Protecting yourself against possible lightning strikes is very important; lightning kills an average of 62 people in the US each year. If you keep all of the windows and doors closed in your car, you’ll be able to return your campsite safely.

Of course, if you’re backpacking (背包旅游), not car camping, and you’re deep in the woods, your car won’t be a good choice. So, what should you do if your car is far away and there’s no other safe shelter nearby? First, you’ll have to make sure that tree branches or other objects don’t fall on you or your campsite. Then you’ll have to get in a safe position to avoid lightning, or flash conditions. What else should you do?

1.The passage wants to tell us    .

A.What’s camping B.How to live through a storm when camping

C.How to travel safely D.Car camping is the safest

2.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Young people like backpacking best.

B.Lightning is dangerous for campers.

C.Car camping is a good choice for deep woods.

D.Camping during summer is the most popular

3.To avoid lightning in a storm, you’d better    .

A.go into your tent quickly

B.cook up the catch of the day over a campsite

C.run into a campsite picnic shelter at once

D.get into your car and return to your campsite later

4.From the last paragraph we can infer    .

A.it is important to learn to protect oneself when camping

B.backpacking is not a good choice for campers

C.people should never camp deep in the woods

D.people should not go camping alone

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved reading crime and detective novels, so I guess it was pretty normal that I started writing them when I was older. However, my family is very big on having a traditional career and so when I said that I wanted to go to college and study writing, my parents told me that I couldn’t. They told me that I had to study for a degree so that I would achieve a career, and not something as risky as writing. I suppose I could have studied journalism, but I didn’t want to lose interest in writing because it would be something I would do every day for work, not for pleasure. I thought that teaching looked like a pretty good compromise, especially because of the long holidays. It was a good choice: by the time I was twenty-five, I’d already finished two novels and had an agent.

To be honest, I never meant to keep my being a crime writer a secret or anything, and my friends have always known. One of the reasons most people don’t know is because my agent told me that my name Hazel sounded too much like a romance novelist for older women. She suggested Brooke Lane and I thought, “Well, if you think it’ll make me successful, okay,” I’d totally forgotten about it until I walked into school one day and saw one of my workmates reading my novel. I asked her some questions about it, and it was so clear that she had no idea that I’d written itshe even offered to lend it to me after she’d finished! Of course, sometimes I wonder what my students would think if they knew that their teacher was going home on the weekend to write about murders and dead bodies, but I think my parents probably did me a favor: my teaching job keeps me in touch with the real world.

1.Hazel is probably    .

A.a teacher and writer B.a journalist

C.a teacher and artist D.an agent

2.The underlined words “is very big on” in the passage most probably mean    .

A.to give no advice B.to misunderstand something

C.to have more experiences D.to like something very much

3.From the passage we can know that Hazel   .

A.told her workmates about her writing novels B.would like to write something for teaching

C.accepted Brooke Lane as her pen name D.agreed to study journalism for a degree

4.Hazel finally realized that her parents’ advice on her career was    .

A.helpful B.exciting C.disappointing D.risky
