When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a...

When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a grocery store to buy the four-year-old some cupcakes, she had no idea that would be a life-changing experience.

As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month, she passed an old man who was by himself. The old man looked cold, until Norah shouted to him, “Hi! It’s my birthday today!” The man stopped and his demeanor changed from distant and serious to warm and friendly. “How old are you today?” the man asked. After some time talking together, Norah asked her mom to take a picture of her with her new friend “Mr Dan”, Dan Peterson, 82. They hugged and after ten minutes went their separate ways. That could have been the end of the story. But it is actually the beginning of a special relationship.

Tara posted the picture of her daughter and Mr. Dan on Facebook and someone who recognized him reached out to her with his contact information. It turned out that Mr. Dan’s wife died in March and he had been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since. The person on Facebook told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr. Dan smile since the death of his wife. Knowing that, Tara contacted Mr. Dan, and ever since Norah and the 82-year-old have developed a friendship unlike any other. “She has shown me a depth of love, a depth that I didn’t know existed,” Mr. Dan told the reporter.

Mr. Dan told Tara that before meeting Norah, he hadn’t had one night of uninterrupted sleep. Anxiety kept him up at all hours and made him restless. After meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. For Mr. Dan’s 82nd birthday on October 20, the mother and the daughter brought balloons and presents—and, of course, cupcakes. Mr. Dan will also spend a day around Thanksgiving with Norah and her family. “If you don’t take the time to notice people, you will never know how you can positively impact a life,” Tara Wood said.

1.Why did Mr. Dan look cold?

A.He felt lonely. B.He disliked little kids.

C.He caught a cold. D.He knew little about Norah.

2.What does the underlined word “demeanor” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Words. B.Body. C.Thoughts. D.Attitude.

3.How did Tara know more about Mr. Dan?

A.From a news reporter. B.From a stranger.

C.From a shop assistant. D.From his neighbor.

4.What can we learn from the story?

A.Giving makes a real difference. B.It is important to respect each other.

C.We should not judge a person at first sight. D.Good things will happen if one keeps trying.

1.A 2.D 3.B 4.A 【解析】 这是一篇记叙文。 由第二段中的“As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month, she passed an old man who was by himself. ”(上个月,当塔拉推着女儿诺拉逛商店时,她路过一位独自一人的老人。)和第三段中的“It turned out that Mr. Dan’s wife died in March and he had been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since.”(结果发现,丹先生的妻子于今年3月去世,此后他一直患有抑郁症和焦虑症。) 故选A项。 2. 由第二段中的“The man stopped and his demeanor changed from distant and serious to warm and friendly.”(那人停了下来,神态从冷淡严肃变成了热情友好。) 由第三段中的“Tara posted the picture of her daughter and Mr. Dan on Facebook and someone who recognized him reached out to her with his contact information.”(塔拉把女儿和丹的照片发布在Facebook上,一个认出丹的人向她提供了他的联系方式。)和“The person on Facebook told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr. Dan smile since the death of his wife. ”(Facebook上的这名人士告诉塔拉,这是他们第一次看到丹微笑,在他妻子去世后。)可知是Facebook上的网友告诉塔拉关于丹先生的事情,Facebook上的网友是塔拉不认识的陌生人。故选B项。 4. 推理判断题。由第一段中的“When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a grocery store to buy the four-year-old some cupcakes, she had no idea that would be a life-changing experience.”(当塔拉·伍德带着女儿到一家杂货店给四岁的孩子买一些纸杯蛋糕时,她不知道这会是一次改变人生的经历。)和最后一段中的“If you don’t take the time to notice people, you will never know how you can positively impact a life,” Tara Wood said.(塔拉·伍德说:“如果你不花时间去关注别人,你就永远不知道如何才能对生活产生积极的影响。”) 故选A项。

    How to Prevent New Coronavirus(冠状病毒)?

New coronavirus is a member of the coronavirus family that cause conditions like the common cold, SARS and other respiratory(呼吸的) conditions. While new coronavirus can be serious, taking preventative measures can help you protect your health at home.

Wash your hands with soap and water to minimize your infection(感染) risk. 1. Wet your hands with warm water, then apply a mild soap. Work the soap for 20-30 seconds, and then wash your hands clean under warm running water.

Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. You may come into contact(接触) with the new coronavirus on a surface, like a door handle or countertop. When this happens, the bacteria can stay on your hands, so you can easily infect yourself if you touch your face with dirty hands. 2.

Stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing. 3. Additionally, coughing and sneezing both release the virus into the air, so they may increase your risk of infection. Keep your distance from people who appear to have symptoms of an upper respiratory infection.

Disinfect high-touch surfaces daily by using a product that kills viruses. Unfortunately, new coronavirus can stay on surfaces, such as door handles and countertops. 4. Make sure the surface stays wet for about 10 minutes so it effectively kills the virus. This limits the risk of the virus staying on the surfaces and potentially causing an infection.

5. Information about new coronavirus has spread on social media, sometimes causing unnecessary fear. It’s helpful to fact-check your information before making any decisions.

A.Try not to worry too much if you’re not truly at risk.

B.Don’t run the risk of handling an animal that might be ill.

C.Use a spray disinfectant or wet wipes to clean the surfaces daily.

D.Call your doctor if you suspect that you are hit by new coronavirus.

E.Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth in case the virus is on your skin.

F.The best way to prevent new coronavirus is to wash your hands as often as possible.

G.Since new coronavirus is a respiratory infection, coughing and sneezing are common symptoms.
