Engineers have launched a huge garbage collection device to gather plastics floating in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii. The plastic makes up what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is the world’s largest spread of garbage, twice the size of the state of Texas.

The Organization Ocean Cleanup created the collection device. The group’s founder is Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old inventor from the Netherlands. When Slat was 16, he went diving in Mediterranean Sea and saw more plastic bags than fish. Since then, he has made up his mind to clean up the oceans.

He told the Associated Press that researchers with his organization have found plastic from the 1960s and 1970s among the material in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic in total. Most of them float on the surface of the water, or are within a few meters of the surface.

Last Saturday, a ship pulling the pipe-shaped floating barrier left San Francisco for the Garbage Patch. The barrier, called the floater, is 600 meters across. Attached to it is a screen (筛子) that hangs three meters down in the water. The screen is designed to collect the plastic as it moves through the water. Sea animals can safely swim under the barrier. The cleanup system also comes with lights powered by the sun, cameras, and other special devices. Slat said this enabled the system to communicate its position at all times.

Shipping containers will hold all the plastic gathered, including bottles and fishing equipment. Slat said the containers were expected to be back on land within a year. Then the plastic will be recycled. And they will also study how the system performs in severe ocean conditions, including huge waves.

A.He showed a great interest in diving.

2.What has the organization Ocean Cleanup found about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

A.Most of its plastic is half a century old.

B.It covers almost the size of the state of Texas.

C.Altogether there are about 1.8 billion pieces of plastic.

D.The majority of its plastic floats on or near the surface.

3.Why was a screen attached to the ship?

A.To power lights in the ship. B.To protect sea animals near it.

C.To tell the position of the ship. D.To collect plastic along the way.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.Approaches to removing garbage in oceans.

B.The problem of garbage in the Pacific Ocean.

C.A young man who does well in classifying garbage.

D.A huge device made to clean garbage in oceans.

Dogs certainly need to bark (犬吠) every now and then, but if your neighbor's dog is getting in the way of  your daily life, you need to do something.

“Before you take action, you should record the dates and times that the barking happens to find out any patterns,” says Schweitzer, who is a dog owner. You might notice the barking only happens when the owners are at work, or during thunderstorms.

After two to three weeks of observing, go to your neighbors with the facts. Wait for a time when the barking is over. “Since you're trying to keep a good relationship, you can't go when you're angry and upset,” says Schweitzer. Besides, your neighbors might not even realize the barks are a problem, especially if the worst barking happens when they're not at home.

Politely explain the times when the barking gets bad, and then suggest a way of solving the problem. Ask if the dog can stay inside during storms, or offer a dog training class.

Making friends with the dog could help you gain some peace and quiet. If your neighbors introduce you to their dog, you should give the dog a treat. “If they become more comfortable seeing you, they're less likely to bark when they see you or when they're in the backyard,” says Schweitzer.

Whatever you do, don't talk with your other neighbors about the problem or start a petition (诉状) to get the dog to quiet down. “Those make people feel angry,” says Schweitzer. “That's when things escalate.”

If weeks go by and you still aren't seeing a difference, follow up with a note. Tie a dog treat on the note to build trust with your neighbors, and make a copy before dropping it off. That way, you'll have evidence (证据) that you've  discussed it before and followed up politely if you need to bring in a third party, says Schweitzer.

1.What should people do first according to Schweitzer?

A.Record when the dog barks. B.Find out why the barking happens.

C.Find out if the dog is really dangerous. D.Record when the neighbor is usually out.

2.When would be a good time for you to talk to your neighbor?

A.When the dog is barking. B.When you are feeling calm.

C.When you've found a problem. D.When your neighbor is walking the dog.

3.What does the underlined word “escalate” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

A.Become familiar. B.Become worse.

C.Get interesting. D.Get personal.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.How to teach your dog to be quiet. B.What to do when your neighbor has a dog.

C.How to deal with a neighbor's noisy dog. D.What to do if your neighbor makes you angry.

When I stepped out of Heathrow Airport, the British accents were music to my ears! The roads were so empty and traffic was so organized, with open spaces everywhere and so few people on the streets—what a difference from where 1 came—Mumbai. The difference was even more obvious after I had spent 21 years of my life living in that place. The streets were unfamiliar, and the faces were all foreign.

I boarded my bus for my university town. I felt like I had been in a fairytale book—the small houses, the quiet streets and the well-dressed people among other things. A small and beautiful three-storeyed building is quite a rarity back home and here, I have yet to see a building taller than that! Back home in India, the kind of rent I pay here could have afforded me a luxurious(豪华的) 2 bedroom-hall-kitchen apartment in a good location. But my accommodation here is the size of my bathroom back home! It’s just a fact... reality can be rude at times!

I really cherish the first day of my new university. I’ve met so many students from countries that I didn’t even know. But living alone in a new place, away from the protection of my family and friends, is a different experience altogether—a wonderful experience of further education!

It's been almost two months now. The novelty(新奇)is gradually disappearing, and the dust is settling down. It’s all just daily now but I feel fully settled. I really like this place. It feels like home!

1.What does the underlined part “that place” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A.Heathrow Airport. B.Britain.

C.Mumbai. D.A university of India.

2.What is the author’s first impression of Britain?

A.Dirty and noisy. B.Different but poor.

C.Hopeful and inspiring. D.Strange but beautiful.

3.What does the author probably do

A.An international student. B.A tourist from India.

C.A British college teacher. D.An unknown writer.

4.What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.The author is less interested in everything because of dust.

B.The author still feels curious about everything around.

C.The author has been used to the new environment.

D.The author feels like going home after nearly two months.
