Breaking bad eating habits and starting good ones is one of the healthiest steps you can take. But making healthy choices natural can take time. 1. In fact, it can take a certain time for a new habit to feel natural. So how do you stay on track until your new healthy-eating plan takes hold? 2.Setting too many goals or too many unrealistic ones can disturb you right from the start. Think about why you’re snacking. 3.Or are you just bored or maybe a little stressed out? Skip the extra calories and take a five-minute walk instead. 4.The buddy(好友)system will keep you both on track. If you fail, don’t give up. According to the European Journal of Psychology study, little bumps(凸块)in the road aren’t likely to disturb the process of creating new habits. So, be patient and get back to your healthy ways as soon as you can. 5.. A.Start small. B.Are you really hungry? C.Try to do something big D.With a little patience, those bad habits will soon be gone E.After all, it’s hard to change a lifetime of bad habits overnight. F.What kind of food do you want to eat when you are hungry? G.And find a friend or co-worker who wants to make healthy changes, too.

“Children who eat three or more hamburgers a week are more likely to suffer from asthma (哮喘),” researchers say. However, they say that the risk may not be caused by the meat-rich diet itself, but by a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables. The study looked into 50,000 children from 20 countries. Parents were asked about their children’s eating habits and whether they had ever suffered from asthma. The effects of their diet seemed to be different depending on where they lived. Fruit and vegetables are more helpful in less rich parts of the world, while eating lots of fish was more helpful in richer countries. Eating at least three hamburgers a week was linked to a greater risk of asthma, but only in wealthier countries. Dr. Gabriele Nagel said different things may cause asthma in different parts of the world. “This gives us more understanding of how asthma affects different people, and its effects in developing as well as developed countries,” she said. High levels of unhealthy fat in hamburgers could increase the risk of asthma. However, the researchers said children who ate several hamburgers a week might have other unhealthy lifestyle habits as well. Researchers said the study helped us understand how asthma and diets are connected. “Previous (先前的) studies have shown that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to reduce a child’s risk of developing asthma symptoms (症状),” Dr. Elaine Vickers said. “Our advice to parents is to make sure that children have a healthy diet and also get plenty of exercise.” 1.What can we know about asthma from paragraph 1? A.The danger of it is common among children. B.Children who eat hamburgers suffer from it. C.Lack of fruit and vegetables may cause it. D.The meat-rich diets can make it much worse. 2.What did parents do in the study? A.They provided information about children’s eating habits. B.They helped look into children from different countries. C.They compared the effects of children’s diets right away. D.They changed their children’s eating habits on purpose. 3.What do the researchers say about the study? A.It shows fruit and vegetables stop children from developing asthma. B.It is based on previous studies but the results are quite different. C.It is helpful for them to know the relation between asthma and diets. D.It offers many suggestions to parents and children on a healthy diet. 4.What is the best title for the text? A.The Risk of Asthma Is High in Wealthier Countries B.Unhealthy Eating Habits May Lead to Asthma C.Eating Hamburgers Increases the Risk of Asthma D.Hamburgers Are Really Bad for People’s Health

Ocean food plays a very important part in our food supply. Not so long ago, the world’s oceans were filled with different types of fish. Now, a large increase in global overfishing has threatened that supply. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 90 percent of the world’s fisheries (渔场) are either being fully exploited (开发), or are at risk of being closed down. With fish supplies running out at home, fishermen are traveling further to find their catch. Frequently, fishermen are crossing over into other countries. As fish supplies closer to their homeland’s shores are decreasing fishermen cross borders to find fish. Overfishing can be found everywhere, from Mexican fishing boats off the US coast of Florida to Russian fishing boats in the western Bering Sea. However, the effect is felt the strongest in the South China Sea. On the other side of the world, West Africa is now seeing malign effects of overfishing. For coastal African countries, such as Senegal, the fishing industry is a large part of the national economy. The World Bank reports nearly 20 percent of the Senegalese are working in the fishing industry. Rashid Sumaila is the Director of Fisheries Economic Research at the University of British Columbia. He says communities that depend on fish for income and food, like Senegal, are now at risk. 1.Why do fishermen cross borders to catch fish? A.Because they want to protect the environment. B.Because they want to enjoy the overseas scenery. C.Because fish supplies in their countries are decreasing. D.Because fishing is not allowed in their own countries. 2.Where can the most serious overfishing be seen according to the text? A.In Russia. B.In the South China Sea. C.Off the US coast of Florida. D.In the western Bering Sea. 3.What does the underlined word “malign” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Harmful. B.Satisfying. C.Hopeful. D.Beneficial. 4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.Most people in Africa will be out of work. B.The World Bank will lend money to fishermen. C.Rashid Sumaila is unconcerned about overfishing. D.Overfishing has some bad effects on African people.

It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly my mother will push the conversation into the Third World War. She’ll talk about my lack of bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major in English, she nearly had a heart attack. “Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she shouts all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to say except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve something because of loving it, not because of fame or salary. I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle (艰难) to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes back home around 5:00 pm or even 6:00 pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future. 1.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 mean? A.The author’s mother argued about something angrily with him. B.The author’s mother expressed different opinions on the war. C.The author’s mother liked talking with him but got angry easily. D.The author’s mother quite disagreed about what to eat for dinner. 2.Why does the author’s mother mention her co-worker’s son? A.To tell the author to learn as hard as he can. B.To persuade the author to become a doctor. C.To encourage the author to receive a scholarship. D.To ask the author to earn much more money. 3.What makes the author’s mother worried about his major? A.Her plans for future. B.Her need to control. C.Her struggle with life. D.Her poor knowledge. 4.What can be inferred from the text? A.The author will become an engineer as his mother wishes. B.Being a scientist is sure to earn high fame and salary. C.The author shows little interest in learning English. D.The author may choose major according to his interest.

He didn’t try to make messes, but he didn’t try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was eating. His socks were never put into the laundry hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else. One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning. “You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m not cleaning today.” And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up book to read. At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom’s spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn’t like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called. “There weren’t any socks in your hamper. I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot. When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt!” However, Mom was still reading and said nothing. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Mom?” said Arthur. “Tomorrow, can you show me how to do some washing? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Many students want to know the best ways to improve their learning. Here are a few useful methods. Focus One of the best ways to organize your study session is to use the Pomodoro Technique. 1. The idea is to use a timer. Let's say, you set the timer for 20 minutes, and focus only on your studies during that time. You cannot check email, or do anything aside from your task. When the timer goes off, you can reward yourself by listening to some music or having a drink of tea. Test yourself When you are studying, you should test yourself often. 2. You can also find all kinds of online tests for many subjects. Interleaving 3. For example, in one study period you might spend time testing yourself on vocabulary words and then test yourself on grammar. Or, if studying math, you could mix multiplication(乘法) and division(除法)problems. It may be better for long-term learning. Teaching Teaching is also a powerful way to learn. 4. Some did not expect to have to teach information, while others did. When they actually teach a lesson, they develop a deeper understanding of the material. Closing thoughts You can create your own plan based on what you need to learn. You might organize your study periods with the Pomodoro technique. Then, you can test yourself and interleave different topics. There are many choices. 5. A.Researchers compared different groups of students. B.In other words, they only study one topic at a time. C.This method is a technique that means you mix different topics. D.All of these techniques can be put together to make a powerful study plan. E.It is a powerful, but simple method that helps people focus on a task. F.When you focus and do tasks that are at the right difficulty level, your brain will become tired. G.If you are using a textbook, then you can do practice questions from the end of each chapter.

With bushfires continuing to swallow different parts of Australia, local zoo in New South Wales, the state which is the easiest to catch fire, has hit the headlines with a heartwarming story. Right in the line of a bushfire, the keepers of Mogo Wildlife Park managed to protect all 200 animals from harm after they received evacuation orders, according to the reports. Netizens were quick to react on social media and praised the bravery of the zoo keeper and staffs, as they stayed and managed to protect animals from uncontrolled fires and even sheltered some at their own house. The 40-year-old zoo keeper, Chad Staples, described the situation as the worst catastrophe, which felt like Armageddon (大决战) here. Luckily, his team had made a precise plan ahead of time by moving everything flammable from the area and the larger animals to safe places. What’s remarkable is that as the smaller ones needed extra shelter, Staples decided to take them to his own house. “Right now in my house there are animals of all descriptions in all the different rooms. They are safe and protected, not single animal lost.” he said.
