“I believe in holding onto traditions because they helped our family flourish(兴旺)in a new country. But this concept is more concretely expressed this way: I believe in feeding monkeys on my birthday — something I’ve done without fail for 35 years.

In the Burmese jungle, monkeys are as common as pigeons. But in America, feeding monkeys means violating the rules.

As a kid, I thought that was cool. I learned English through watching bad television shows and expected that I was the chosen warrior(勇士)sent to defend my family. Dad and I would go to the zoo early in the morning, just the two of us. When the Coast was clear, I would throw my peanuts to the monkeys.

I never had to explain myself until my 18th birthday. It was the first year I didn’t go with my father. I went with my friends and arrived 10 minutes after the zoo gates closed. “Please,” I begged the zookeeper, “I feed monkeys for my family, not for me. Can’t you make an exception?” “Go find a pet store,” she said.

If only it were so easy. That time, I got lucky. I found out that a high school classmate trained the monkeys for the movie Out of Africa, so he allowed me to feed his monkeys. Once a man with a pet monkey suspected that my story was a ploy — that I was an animal rights activist out to liberate his monkey. Another time, a zoo told me that outsiders could not feed the monkeys without violating the zookeepers’ collective bargaining agreement. Once in a pet store, I managed to feed a marmoset(狨)being kept in a birdcage. Another time, I was asked to wear a special suit to feed a laboratory monkey.

It’s rarely easy and, yet, somehow I’ve found a way to feed a monkey every year since I was born.

1.Why has the author fed monkeys all these years?

A.To please his father.

B.To develop a new hobby.

C.To celebrate his birthday.

D.To keep up his family tradition.

2.How did the author and his father feed the zoo monkeys?

B.They pretended to be warriors.

C.They did it with the help of friends.

D.They got the zookeeper’s permission.

3.What does the underlined word “ploy” in Paragraph 5 mean?

Everything you do to protect the planet helps all living things, including humpbacks(座头鲸)and other species of whales that live in oceans worldwide. And yes-just one kid, like you, can make a difference. 1..

Don’t litter. Rubbish thrown away carelessly outside often washes into storm drains(排水沟), which empty into rivers and eventually flow to the oceans. 2., including whales.

Say, “No bag, thank you.” Whether you’re buying toys, snacks, or clothes, tell the checkout person you don’t need a bag. 3., you’ll help reduce the 100 million plastic bags that each year block sewers(下水道), and get swallowed by whales, sea turtles, and other wild life.

Plant a tree. 4.. They produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide(二氧化碳), a gas that animals, including humans, produce naturally as they breathe. But because carbon dioxide also comes from cars and factories, there is too much of it in the atmosphere, which is contributing to global warming. If everyone planted one tree, those trees would remove a large amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

5.. Every time you leave a room for more than a minute, turn off the light you’re using. In this way, you save energy and keep greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.

Try the family challenge! Many streams and rivers are polluted and littered with rubbish. You and your family can help preserve the waterways by joining others in your community to pick up rubbish.

A.Trees help clean the air we breathe

B.Turn off the light

C.Avoid driving cars

D.By carrying your own reusable bag

E.Treat them like friends

F.Here are ideas for easy small things you can do

G.Pollution is a growing problem for all the Earth’s oceans and its wildlife

Energy goes from one plant or animal to another. A food chain shows how this energy moves. Each time an animal gets eaten, its energy is passed onto the animal that eats it. The food chain is very important because it keeps the balance of nature. If one part of the food chain disappears, it can affect all the other plants and animals. Any threat to the food chain is a threat to the environment’s biodiversit(生物多样性). The food chain helps keep animal populations in balance. However, if something happens to increase or decrease one of the links in the food chain, that balance is broken. If one animal becomes endangered, it puts all the animals above it at risk.

Some of the threats are natural, such as wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, floods and so on. But the biggest threats to the food chain come from you and me. These threats include overhunting, overfishing, logging, farming, development, pollution, etc. The food chain is endangered anywhere humans have had an effect on the natural environment.

A recent study shows that the overfishing of large sharks is damaging the food chain along the US Atlantic coast. Canadian and American scientists say sharks are being killed in great numbers for their meat and fins(). Now, not enough sharks are around to eat the cownose(牛鼻) ray. The ray’s population has increased and they have eaten up the shellfish to the point where it has hurt commercial(商业的) fishing.

Many of us disturb the natural environment in our own backyards. It’s up to us to take care of the environment and try not to disrupt the natural food chain. If we don’t act responsibly, animals will start disappearing.

1.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.The food chain is not easy to be broken.

B.The energy of an animal usually disappears when it dies.

C.Increasing the links will not break the balance of nature.

D.Breaking the food chain is bad for the biodiversity of the environment.

2.The study mentioned in Paragraph 3 proves that            .

A.human activities can be a big threat to the food chain

B.we are all responsible for the breaking of the food chain

C.natural disasters are hard to break the food chain

D.hunting large sharks for meat is beneficial

3.We can infer that the writer wrote this passage mainly to           .

A.explain what the food chain is

B.tell us something interesting about Nature

C.suggest that we stop eating meat to save animals

D.suggest that we not disrupt the natural food chain

If you will be cycling, you will need to know what these traffic signs and signals mean.

A sign like this one means that there is a bike lane(道). If there is a bike lane, you are required to use it. If there is not a bike lane, you should ride with traffic as far to the right side of the road as possible.

When the signal light turns green, cars go. When you cross the street at a signal light, you should wait for the walk signal. Be sure to look carefully to the left, right and left again, before crossing the street.

This signal is the WALK sign. It has a picture of a person walking instead of using the word WALK.

This signal is the DON’T WALK sign. It is part of the signal with the picture of a person walking. This is a picture of a red hand, meaning you should stop. You should wait to cross the street until the green picture of the person walking is showing.

Car drivers and bikers must come to a complete stop at STOP signs.

A yield sign means to slow down and be ready to stop. If there are pedestrians(行人)or vehicles in or nearing the intersection, you must stop. If there is no traffic in or nearing the intersection and it is safe, you may go through.

This sign means you are coming to a crosswalk. Car drivers and bikers must stop to allow people in the crosswalk to cross the street.

“Who does the cooking in your home?” I’m often asked by my colleagues. “My wife and I share it 50/50,” I usually say without hesitation.

It’s a lie, of course. We’re pretty much even(相等的)when it comes to the children and the elderly. But the paying of bills isn’t 50/50-my wife pays all sorts of household expenses, so I never even have to set eyes on them. And the cooking isn’t 50/50, either.

The truth is that I am the cook. On my recent 40th birthday, I received the following gifts from my children: a new pot, two mini bottles of truffle oil, a decorative salad-dressing pourer, and a juice-making machine. For a moment I longed for something more manly, a cricket bat, perhaps, and then had to admit that all these things would be useful for me.

It’s not that my wife can’t or doesn’t like to cook (she makes delicious Welsh cakes). Nor has it always been this way. In the early years of our marriage I’d be relaxing with a glass of wine while my wife prepared for dinner after work.

But at some point that changed and I became the cook. Ten years with my wife gave me the rewards-I can throw together a roast, and I can make much foreign food. But I have truly become a monster(怪物) in the kitchen, unable to keep myself away from cooking. “You have to add Dijon to the sauce; it brings out the taste of the cheese,” I volunteer, as my wife is cooking. “Quick, stir in the butter so the dish becomes delicious.”

Is it any wonder that my wife has given up coming into the kitchen while I find the whole process of chopping, mixing, and adding things deeply satisfying?

1.What do the writer and his wife probably share evenly at home?

3.What do we know about the writer’s wife?

A.She can’t cook.
