Don Ritchie, a famous Australian man. For nearly 50 years, he successfully stopped 160 people from killing themselves at a cliff(悬崖) called ‘the Gap’ – with just a kind word and a smile.

Ritchie had served in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. In 1964, he moved into a house on Old South Head Road. He began saving strangers soon after.

Ritchie was a real gentleman who purposely chose to live right across the street from ‘the Gap’, just because he wanted to continue saving lives. He would wake up every morning and look out of the window for anyone standing too close to the edge of the cliff. If he saw someone and thought they might jump, he would simply walk over with a smile and say, Is there something I could do to help you?” That sounds very simple, but it worked Ritchie tried to have a talk with these people and ended up inviting them back to his house for tea or breakfast.

In 2006, Ritchie was given the Medal of the Order of Australia for all his saving lives. In 2010, he and his wife were named Woollahra Council’s citizens of the year and in 2011, he was given the Local Hero Award for Australia by the National Australia Day Council.

In a situation where most would turn a blind eye, Don has taken action. With such simple actions Don has saved a number of lives. Don’s story touched the hearts of all Australians and challenged us to rethink what it means to be a good neighbor.

You’ve heard of 3D printing from newspaper and TV programs. It can “print” in plastic, metal, nylon, and over a hundred other materials. 3D printing technology has been around since the 1980s, it was not widely used until the early 2010s. The first working 3D printer was created in 1984 by Chuck Hull.

3D printers use many different types of technologies, but they all share one thing in common: they create a three-dimensional(维度的) object by building it layer(层), by continuing layer, until the whole object is completed. Imagine a baker lay down each layer one at a time until the whole cake is formed. 3D printing is somewhat similar, but just a bit stricter. How can 3D printers work so well? The most important thing-a program, a 3D printer also needs to have instructions for what to print from a computer. It needs a file as well. The file which is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) paper is created with the use of a 3D modeling program. The program creates a paper that is sent to the 3D printer. Along the way, software pieces the design into hundreds, or more likely thousands of layers. The 3D printer builds up one layer at a time, from the bottom to the top, until the object is done.

3D printings can be used for making many kinds of things such as machine parts, daily life objects, even human organs(器官) using a person's own cells.

Nowadays, Marc. Dillon founds a project which deals with many world famous paintings like Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s Sunflower with 3D technology. This project helps the blind people enjoy the fantastic art through touching. In order to provide a good user experience, these 3D paintings have special instruments which can tell people what they touch.

1.The first working 3D printer was created in _________.

A. 1980       B. 1984       C. 2001       D. 2010

2.From Paragraph 2, we can know that_______________.

A. how a 3D printer works

B. what a 3D printing is

C. questions of a 3D printer

D. uses of a 3D printer

3.According to the passage, ___________can help the blind know what they touch.

A. CAD paper

B. Machine parts.

C. The world famous paintings

D. Special instruments

4.Which of the following is true?

A. 3D printers use 3 types of technologies.

B. 3D printers make printings from the top.

C. 3D printers work as a baker makes a cake.

D. 3D printers piece the design into a few layers.

Most people follow others blindly mainly under the effect of peer(同龄人) pressure. Some people also feel it safe to follow a large number of people. In some rare cases it might be right to follow the crowd (群众), but in most cases this can be one big mistake. Ninety-five percent of people never succeed because they are following the wrong group. Actually there are reasons why we shouldn’t follow the crowd blindly.  According to a study, people tend to follow the crowd when they aren’t sure about the direction they should take. This means a large number of people could be following others without understanding what’s right and what’s wrong! This attracts more people to follow them and the result is that most people move in a certain direction even if it isn’t right.

A man who wants to be successful always hopes for others’ guidance and he usually follows the same path of most people, but the question this man never asks himself is: are all of those people successful? Of course not! If you want to follow a crowd, then follow a successful one. However, in real life you’ll only find one successful person among hundreds of people, and that’s why following the crowd makes no sense at all.

Most people act without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because

they're greater than you in number, then sooner or later you'll discover that you're

making decisions you might regret later.

However, should we never follow the crowd? No. I'm not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I'm just asking you to think wisely before you take a decision. If you find others are right, there is no problem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they're moving in, don't follow them blindly.

1.What does the underlined word “rare” mean?

A. A small number of.

B. A large number of.

C. The total number of.

D. The same number of.

2.A man who wants to succeed should_____________.

A. follow the crowd

B. follow others’ guidance

C. follow a successful person

D. follow the same path of most people

3.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Ways of finding successful people to follow.

B. Advantages of making a right direction.

C. Examples of not following others blindly.

D. Reasons of not following others balindly.

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

When Lydia Nash appeared on the TV programme Who wants to be a millionaire(百万富翁)? and was lucky enough to win £16,000, she decided to give all the money away. This is not surprising if she has been rich or famous, but Lydia is a 19-year-old student.

Lydia gave all the money to a charity which helps the children whose parents are dead. She had worked there as a volunteer for the past three years. She first visited orphanage(孤儿院)at the age of seventeen, and she felt very sad by what she saw.

Some of her friends at university thought that maybe she had made the wrong decision. Some people said she should have saved it to buy a house or to pay for her education. She said, “That really worried me. Students seem to live in an unreal world, where they always complain (抱怨)about being poor. But there’s a very big difference between our situation and people who have no money.”

With the help of the money Lydia gave them, the charity has just finished building “Rainbow House”, a new building that will house 50 children whose parents are dead.

If Lydia had won a million pounds and not only£16,000, would she still have given away all the money? She said,” Before going on the show I thought a lot about what it would be like to have a lot of money and I realized that I wouldn’t like it at all. And then, of course, as I had been to the orphanage and had seen all the work that needed to be done, I knew how useful that money could be. It was far more important for the charity than it could ever be for me. I think I got more enjoyment out of giving the money away than if I had kept it for myself.”

1.Is Lydia a student?

2.When did she first visit the orphanage?

3.What do her friends at university think she should do with the money?

4.Who is Rainbow House built for?

5.What kind of person is Lydia according to the passage? ( At least 2 points)
