Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.

Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.

No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he/ she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.

Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.

1.How many people in the world are left-handed now?

A. Less than one sixth.

B. More than a half.

C. About 40%.

D. The passage doesn’t tell us.

2. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word damaged in this  passage?

A. knocked        B. changed           C. broke       D. harmed

3.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed.

B. Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness.

C. Today children are not made to use their right hands only.

D. Scientists think there must be some reason why people become left-handed.

4.The best title for this passage is _______.

A. Scientists’ New Inventions

B. Left-handed People

C. Which Hand

D. Different Brains, Different Hands

Recently the “China dream” has been the subject of a public topic. Although it is quite common for Chinese people to dream of a prosperous(繁荣) China, most people also have their own dreams. Throughout China’s thousands of years of history, these “China dreams” have always existed(存在). Do you have a “China dream”? I brought up this topic with several young Chinese students with higher U.S. educational backgrounds(教育背景). Unsurprisingly, they all had their own heartfelt hopes and dreams for their motherland.

Fred Wang, an MBA candidate(毕业生) in the U.S. said, “I dream of equal chance for the young in China. Equality means all young people can compete fairly(公平), based on the rule-of-law no matter whether they are rich or poor.”

Yujie Zhao, another MBA candidate in California said, “I dream of a happy family with an affordable home. I dream of having the best education for my children so they will not lose at the starting line, and I dream of being able to take good care of my parents after they retire(退休).” She said, “It seems like all my dreams are about family, but it is so true for most Chinese young dreamers today.”

Yiqiong Zhang, an MBA graduate from the US shared her dreams. “I have a dream which I have been holding for many years, that is after working hard for about 20 to 25 years, I can have enough money to build and manage a small bookstore or a flower shop. Besides working hard, I am able to enjoy life: to play the piano, to hike and to enjoy a two-month-long vacation every year. This may be a common dream among young Chinese students.”

There is no doubt (疑问)that all of these young students have their own “China dream”. They all love China, they all love running after their dreams. Beautiful “China Dream” needs hard work. Everyone should work hard to make their dream come true.

1.Which is RIGHT about the three young Chinese students?

A. They receive higher education in China.

B. They have their own hopes and dreams for China.

C. They receive education of all levels in America.

D. They have their own hopes and dreams for America.

2.What does the word “compete” in the second paragraph mean?

A. 对待    B. 完成    C. 竞争    D. 成功

3.Yujie Zhao hopes that ___________.

A. all young people can have equal chances.

B. she can have a happy family with a big house

C. her children can receive the best education in America

D. she can look after her parents well when they are old

4.From the passage we can learn that  ____________.

A. “China Dream” is very difficult to come true.

B. “China Dream” needs everyone’s hard work.

C. “China Dream” is a subject we need to study in China.

D. “China Dream” is only a dream about the development of our country.

It is said that the eyes are the windows of our soul. Beautiful and bright eyes not only show a good health but also make you look very attractive. However, to have healthy eyes you have to look after them properly. Your eyes need everyday attention.

Pay more attention to your diet. First, eat food that is good for your eyes. They are fresh fruits and vegetables as fish, eggs, and milk. Besides, a regular amount of vitamins A and B2 should also be taken.

A regular and sound sleep is a must. It relaxes the eye muscles(肌肉)and gives them the rest required. Sleep not only helps the body to repair its tired tissues (组织). Usually, you must sleep for at least seven to eight hours every day. Loss of sleep can give you dark circles under the eye.

You must exercise your eyes every day. Blink (眨眼) yours eyes at regular periods, which makes the eyeballs watery, and gives them a good wash.

We use our eyes in many unnoticeable and wrong ways. Fox example, if a small thing goes into our eye we start rubbing it, which is wrong. Rubbing can cause damage(伤害) to your eyes. Don’t read or write in poor or bright sunlight. Always use sunglasses as sunlight can cause eye tiredness. Light should not shine directly in your eyes. My two little daughters and I usually go out and help others on Thankful Thursday. Last Thursday, we were going to buy lunch for the beggars(乞丐) in the street. Then we went to the nearest KFC.

I ordered 15 lunches from it and drove my car to hand them out. We gave the lunches to the beggars. They were excited. We were happy to see that. Then we noticed a small, old woman, asking for pocket money. We gave her our last lunch bag. Before we got into the car, she started to speak to us.No one has done anything like this for me before, she said with a smile. Well,Im glad that we were the first, I answered. So, when will you eat your lunch? I asked.

She just looked at me with her big, brown eyes and said, Oh, dear, I’m not going to eat this lunch. You see, I have a little daughter, I usually cant buy her favourite food. But today she will be so happy!

I don’t know if the kids noticed the tears in my eyes. I have asked many times whether our actions of kindness were too small to change anything. Yet at that moment, I realized the truth of the words: We can do small things with great love.
