Tick, tock, tick, tock. I’m sitting here, watching the movements of my existence pass slowly away. My house has been 36 for such a long time, and I’m lonely and forgotten. That was about five years ago…. Some of the local kids have started the rumor that the house is haunted(闹鬼的)--- and, in a way, it is. It is haunted by 52 of all the people who have lived in it. Every second has 53 me so much. I have been 54 them all day and they are almost up for me.... I hope that someday somebody will 55 me, and drop in on me again. Charles Plumb was a US Navy jet fighter pilot in Viet Nam. After 75 missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb parachuted down into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. One day, Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant when a man from another table came up and said “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Viet Nam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. “I guess it worked”. Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute(降落伞) hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, “I kept wondering what he looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said ‘Good morning. How are you?’ or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was ‘just a sailor’”. Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent at a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds(伞罩) and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn’t know. Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize people who pack your parachutes. 1.Why didn’t Plumb say hello to the sailor each time he passed him on the Kitty Hawk? A. He thought the sailor was just an unimportant man. B. He didn’t like him at that time. C. He was very busy then. D. He didn’t know him well then. 2. What did the sailor do on the Kitty Hawk at the Viet Nam War? A. weaved clothes for the pilots. B. repaired the wooden table in the ship. C. helped the jets start. D. packed the parachutes for the fighter pilots. 3. What does the writer think we should do? A. We should help each other if they are in trouble. B. We shouldn’t look down upon the sailors. C. We should be thankful to others’ help. D. We should be honest to our friends. 4. Which is the best title for the passage? A. A story about a sailor. B. Who pack your parachutes? C. Don’t forget your past! D. Never forget your friends!

A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone’s else or ourselves --- the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!” Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clear will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive. Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid. Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours. 1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________. A. not sticks and stones but words will hurt us B. inspiring words give us confidence C. negative words may let us down D. words have a lasting effect on us 2. There is no sense for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _______ A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves B. we can benefit from talking to ourselves C. talking to ourselves always gives us courage D. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone 3. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______ A. praise ourselves B. remind ourselves C. make ourselves relaxed D. give ourselves amusement 4.The author would probably hold the view that ___________ A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers B. negative words may stimulate us to make more progress C. people tend to remember friendly words D. it is better to think twice before talking to others

A university graduate described as a “respectable and intelligent” woman is seeking professional help after being convicted of (证明有……罪)shoplifting for the second time in six months. Ana Luz, recently studying for her PhD, has been told she could end up behind bars unless she can control the desire to steal from shops. Luz ,who lives with her partner in Fitzwilliam Road, Cambridge, admitted stealing clothes worth £9.95 from John Lewis in Oxford Street, London, on March 9. Phillip Lemoyne, prosecuting(起诉),said Luz selected some clothes from a display and took them to the ladies’ toilet in the store .When she came out again she was wearing one of the skirts she had selected, having taken off the anti-theft security alarms(防盗警报装置). She was stopped and caught after leaving the store without paying, Mr. Lemoyne said. He added that she was upset on her arrest and apologized for her actions. Luz, 28, was said to have been convicted of shoplifting by Cambridge judges last October, but Morag Duff, defending, said she had never been in trouble with the police before that. “She is ashamed and embarrassed but doesn’t really have any explanation why she did this,” Miss Duff said. “She didn’t intend to steal when she went into the store. She is at a loss to explain it. She is otherwise a very respectable and intelligent young lady. She went to her doctor and asked for advice because she wants to know if there is anything in particular that caused her to do this.” Judge David Azan fined Luz £ 50, and warned : “You’ve got a criminal record .If you carry on like this ,you will end up in prison ,which will ruin your bright future you may have.” Luz achieved a degree in design at university in her native Spain, went on to a famous university in Berlin, Germany for her master’s degree and is now studying for a PhD at Cambridge University, UK. 1. Younger adults who get either little sleep or a lot of it may see a greater expansion in their waistlines(腰围)over time, a study published suggests. Researchers found that among black and Hispanic adults younger than 40, those who typically slept for five hours or less each night had a greater accumulation of belly fat over the next five years, versus(相比于) those who averaged six or seven hours. Those who slept eight hours or more in bed each night also showed a bigger fat gain - but it was less obvious than that seen in "short sleepers." The study, reported in the Journal Sleep, does not prove that too little or too much sleep directly leads to excess fat gain. But the findings support and extend those of other studies linking sleep duration - particularly a lack of sleep - to weight gain and even to higher risks of diabetes(糖尿病) and heart disease. Among participants younger than 40, the study found, those who said they slept for five hours or less each night gained more belly fat than those who averaged six or seven hours of sleep. On average, short sleepers showed a 32 percent gain in visceral(内脏的)fat, versus a 13 percent gain among those who slept six or seven hours per night, and a 22 percent increase among men and women who got at least eight hours of sleep each night. A similar pattern was seen with superficial abdominal(腹部)fat. The findings, according to lead researcher Dr. Kristen G. Hairston, support the belief that sleep habits affect weight and health in general. "Sleep is an important part of your overall health - not just in whether you're tired during the day," she said. There may be indirect effects; people who get too little sleep may be too tired during the day to exercise, while those who spend a lot of time in bed may spend less time being active, relative to people who sleep fewer hours. Research also suggests that sleep loss alters people's levels of appetite-regulating hormones(荷尔蒙)- which could, in theory, cause them to overeat. Depression, which often affects people's sleep and has been linked to weight gain, could also be a factor, Hairston noted. 1.Who may have the higher risk of being fat over the next five years? A. Jack, a Hispanic man, aged 35, sleeps for 3 hours every night. B. Candy, a black woman, aged 41, sleeps for about 5 hours every night. C. Bob, an American, aged 50, sleeps for more than 12 hours every day. D. John, a student in Africa, sleeps for more than 6 hours every week. 2.What does the study, reported in the Journal Sleep find? A. Too little or too much sleep directly gives rise to the fat gain. B. People are subject to heart disease due to the lack of sleep. C. It is admitted that sleep plays an important part in our health. D. Researchers find a longer sleep time is better for our health. 3.What does the lead researcher Dr. Kristen G. Hairston agree with? A. People should do some exercise in their daily life. B. There is a close link between sleep habits and health. C. More nutrition is greatly needed when we lack sleep. D. More and more people tend to sleep less than before. 4.What can we infer from the passage? A. Younger adults getting little or much sleep may become fat. B. We are supposed to do exercise as much as possible to keep fit. C. We should keep a good sleep habit to improve our health. D. We have to spare no efforts to drive depression away. 5.What’s the best title of the passage? A. Sleep Habits Linked to Fat Gain in Younger Adults. B. Doing Exercise Is the Best Way to Keep Fit. C. Our Waistlines Can Be Driven Away Right Now. D. Diabetes No Longer bother all of Young People.

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在文后第76至第85小题的空格里填上适当的单词并将答案转写到答题卡上。 注意:每空仅填一个单词。 The ancient religions of the Greeks and Romans were based on myths. Originally the word meant “spoken words” or stories. Nowadays myths refer to tales without a kernel of truth, or fantasies. In nearly every civilization people tried to control their surroundings and the things happening around them to make them less threatening. In prehistoric cultures myths were used to explain natural phenomena. Ancient civilizations saw the earth as the goddess because of its fertility. Other phenomena like wind, lightning and thunder also were brought into connection with supernatural forces. The people felt themselves surrounded by gods and completely dependent. The Greek myths also originated in that manner, but had more functions. They also explained the beginning of the world and the origin of man. Furthermore, the myths kept alive the memories of the foundation of important cities as well as the heroic deeds of civilizations and individuals. The tales of heroes, human beings with often supernatural capacities, gave men examples of perfection. During the whole Classical Period people believed the myths, but over time they came to be taken less and less seriously. During the Greek Period myths were spread by word of mouth. The singing of mythical events was an important aspect of religious ritual. Many singers traveled around and sang the tales they heard on their way. The first collection of myths was the work of Homer. He was blind, and to survive he collected traditional stories and let them been written down by others. The books of his that we know are the Iliad and the Odyssey. The first author to write about the beginning of the world and its deities was Hesiod in the 18the century.
