Can you remember the day when you spoke your first word? If you can, you are unusual. Try to imagine what first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time eating, sleeping and crying. As you grew older, you were awake more of the time. It took your parents more time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously (好奇). You began to know that people made certain sounds to go with certain things. Then you began to try making the sounds you heard. And step by step you were able to make the right sound for one thing. On that day you came to understand the secret of language. The secret is that a certain sound means a certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is no good as a word unless everybody agrees on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things, can they understand each other. Then, and only then do these people have a LANGUAGE. After you found the secret of language, you learned words. Some of the words meant things, such as BOOKS, CHAIRS and SHOES. Some words meant doing things, such as GO and SWIM, and other words describe things, such as GOOD and DIRTY. Soon you learned to put words together to express your idea, such as “I want to go out and play with my friends.” This is language. By means of language people can communicate. So we say languages are means of communication. 1._________ can remember the day when __________. A. One, he spoke his first word B. No one, he spoke his first word C. Most people, they spoke their first words D. None, they spoke their first words 2.The secret of language is that__________. . A. one sound might be as good as another B. people can understand each other C. a certain sound is for a certain thing D. there is a special sound for each person 3.You could learn words________. A. before you knew what the language was B. after you knew what the language was C. before you knew the secret of the language D. when you were a baby 4.The aim in using language is ________. A. to get everything one wants from others B. to say what one wants to know C. to share ideas, opinions, news, etc with one another D. to make oneself understood by others

One day, a patient came to see me. He worked as a waiter in a restaurant and his problem was acid reflux (胃酸倒流), a disease that influences as many as 40 percent of Americans, a marked increase in recent years. Reflux can lead to esophageal (食道的) cancer, which has increased by about 500 percent since the 1970s. The drugs we use to treat reflux don't always work and may even increase the risk of developing cancer when used long term. What is responsible for these worrying developments? For one, our poor diet, with its huge increases in the intake of sugar, fat, soft drinks, and unhealthy foods. But another important fact has been overlooked: dinnertime. Over the past twenty years, the time of my patients' evening meals has become later and later. Dinner — already pushed back by longer work hours — is often further delayed (推迟) by activities such as shopping and exercise. In my experience, the single most important treatment for reflux is to avoid late eating. A patient with reflux came to see me because her father and uncle died of esophageal cancer, and she was afraid of getting it too. Her nightly routine (常规) included a 9 p.m. dinner with at least two bottles of red wine. The reflux was serious, and changes were needed. She listened, then did not come back to see me for a year. “For the first two months, I just hated you,” she told me, “and for the next two months, I was having some trouble eating. I guessed I was going to die of esophageal cancer.” Then she added, “You know, we're the reason that it's not so easy to get 6 p.m. reservations (预约) at the good restaurants anymore.” To stop the increase in reflux disease, we have to stop eating at least three hours before bed. As for my waiter patient? I told him to eat dinner before 7 p.m. Within six weeks, his reflux was gone. 1.The disease the waiter caught is _____. A. on the rise B. easy to control C. unusual in America D. the most dangerous cancer 2.What does the underlined word “overlooked” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Talked about a lot. B. Paid no attention to. C. Carefully looked into. D. Taken into consideration. 3.Why did the woman patient hate the author? A. He spoke of her dead father and uncle. B. He asked her to change her eating habits. C. He couldn't find a way to deal with her problem. D. He couldn't make her healthy again within a year. 4.The author writes the text to tell us _____. A. not to work late at night B. to avoid eating at restaurants C. unhealthy foods cause cancer D. the danger of eating late at night

The morning of March 2, 2012, was a busy one for the students in Mrs. Goodknight’s class in Henryville, Indiana. There was morning meeting with poems to read, jokes to share, and tests to prepare for. “It was just an ordinary day,” says student Lyric Darling, 12. At noon, while students played basketball under a sunny sky, a huge tornado (龙卷风) was forming 50 miles away. Around 2:25 p.m., 20 minutes before school was supposed to let out, a huge tornado touched down in Fredericksburg, 20 miles away. As word spread, parents rushed to the school. Teachers rushed to get kids onto buses or into waiting cars. By 2:45, the skies were darkening. “I was crying,” says Lyric. “All around me, kids were crying.” Two buses returned to the school with students whose parents had not been home. Teachers brought the kids to the office, where they all took cover under desks. Suddenly the power went out. And then the tornado attacked the school, filled with wood and trees and glass. The tornado was over the school for less than one minute. In that time, it almost completely destroyed the school. Teachers were about to lead the group out of the office when a second tornado was upon them. When it finally ended, the group made its way out of the building. Over the next few hours, parents arrived, overjoyed to find their children. The next day, it was clear: All of Henryville’s people were safe. There were so many sad and frightening stories. Some students saw the tornado with their own eyes. Some lost their homes. But many described how the community (社区) came together to help and support each other. “You learn what’s important,” Mrs. Goodknight says. 1.When did the tornado hit the school? A. In the morning. B. At noon. C. Around 2:25. D. After 2:45. 2.What did the teachers do in the face of the tornado? A. They asked all the students to take cover under desks. B. They told parents to wait for their kids at home. C. They sent all the students to their homes. D. They helped the students get on buses. 3.We can learn from the text that the tornado _____.
