Satellites(卫星) are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving.Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls. Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us through satellites.Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location. We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator(赤道).Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates.A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae(天线)facing the earth.Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit(轨道),So there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days. Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth.A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired.Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash(撞)into each other. 1.Which of the following is NOT done by satellites according to the passage? A.Sending information for weather forecast. B.Taking photographs of the Earth. C.Sending TV pictures. D.Providing food for airplane pilots. 2.What’s the speed the earth rotates at? A.35,880 kilometers per hour. B.335,880 kilometers per hour. C.11,000 kilometers per hour. D.110,000 kilometers per hour 3.Why does the satellite move around the world at the same speed as the Earth rotates? A.In order to take photographs. B.In order to stay in a certain position in the orbit. C.In order to move away from its orbit. D.In order to send television pictures. 4.What does the underlined word “This” in the 3rd paragraph refer to? A.A satellite. B.A little rocket. C.A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky. D.The satellite puts the rockets in the right position.

When we give our kids holiday gifts, many of us can’t wait to hear their appreciative cries of“thank you!”once the wrapping gets ripped off. But here’s a tip: You’d be wise not to expect much gratitude from them for what they receive. Gratitude can make us happier, healthier, and even fitter. But do the kids show their gratitude for the stuff we buy them? All the research I’ve done has convinced me that it won’t happen. One mom told me that when she asked her 16-year-old son to thank her for buying him a cellphone, he said, “But that’s what moms should do.” From a teenager’s angle, it’s a parent’s responsibility to take care of the family. According to Dunham, Yale’s assistant professor of psychology, “When teenagers code it that way, a gift is no longer something given freely and voluntarily”—it’s just mom and dad living up to their obligation. Parents do have the right to demand good manners and children should thank sincerely whoever gives them something. But kids can’t know how blessed they are unless they have a basis for comparison. And they don’t learn that by a parent complaining that they’re ungrateful. We need to give our children the gift of a wider world view. Show by example that gratitude isn’t aboutstuff—which ultimately can’t make any of us happy anyway. It’s about realizing how lucky you are and paying your good fortune forward. You can collect all the charitable appeals and sit down together with the kids to go through them. You set the budget for giving and the kids decide how it’s distributed. Once the conversation about gratitude gets started, it’s much easier to continue all year. Also you can set up a family routine at bedtime where kids describe three things that have made them grateful. When kids go off to college, you can text them a picture each week of something that inspires your appreciation. Teaching children to focus on the positive and appreciate the good in their lives is perhaps the greatest gift we can give them. And we can all learn together that the things that really matter aren’t on sale at a department store. 1.How do children respond when receiving gifts from their parents? A.They show no interest in their parents’ gifts. B.They can’t wait to open their parents’ gifts. C.They show much gratitude to their parents for the gifts. D.They take their parents’ gifts for granted. 2.To make children grateful for what they have, parents should _________. A.live up to their obligation B.ask their children to have good manners C.teach their children by setting an example D.complain their children are ungrateful 3.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs? A.No gifts are greater than teaching children to be positive and grateful. B.Children ought to realize how lucky they are to have considerate parents. C.Children are supposed to decide how to distribute their own money D.It is easy for parents to start the conversation about gratitude. 4.What’s the purpose of the author writing this text? A.To explain the reason why children offer no gratitude to their parents. B.To give advice to parents on how to help children develop gratitude. C.To encourage parents to do things together with their children. D.To remind parents of their responsibility to educate their children.

“Walt Disney World is banning selfie-sticks from its theme parks because selfie-sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast." Disney World spokeswoman Kim Prunty said. Under a new policy, which takes effect Tuesday, the poles won’t make it past the bag check at any Disney World theme park. The sticks also won't be allowed in Disney World water parks or Disney Quest, a gaming attraction at Downtown Disney. Selfie-sticks will also become forbidden at Disneyland Resort in California on June 30. The prohibition begins at Disney's parks in Paris and Hong Kong on July 1. Guests will be checked for the equipment during the routine bag check that happens near the parks' entrances. They will have an option of turning in their selfie-sticks for pick-up later or to go back to their cars or hotel rooms to keep them. Visitors will be told of the policy in locations such as the parking lots and at the resort's hotels. The prohibition will be added to the park rules post on Disney World's website. The issue has been building at Disney. Previously, the sticks were prohibited from its rides, and "no selfie-sticks" signs were at select rides, such as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom. Cast members have given oral warnings to rule breakers. Selfie-stick users put smartphones and cameras on the ends of poles to extend their reach, frequently capturing theme-park moments through self-portraits. The tools have been banned in public places – including some museums and stadiums – worldwide obstructing views or causing safety issues. Disney World already prohibits items such as skateboards, inline skates, wagon, folding chairs and glass containers, according to its official website, which also lists “other items that we determine may be harmful.” Universal Orlando has banned selfie-sticks and other loose items from certain thrill rides at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure theme parks, but it has not set parkwide bans. 1.Which of the following objects has already been banned in Disney theme parks before the new policy takes effect? A.smart phones. B.folding chairs. C.cameras. D.containers. 2.According to the ban, if the guests are found carrying selfie-sticks during the routine bagcheck, they may __________. D.put them in the trunk of their cars. 3.The underlined word in the fifth paragraph probably means__________. A.changing. B.broadening. C.blocking.
