In our modern world, when something wears out, we throw it away and buy a new one. The problem is that countries around the world have growing mountains of rubbish because people are throwing out more rubbish than ever before. How do the society become a throwaway one? First of all, it is now easier to replace an object than to spend time and money repairing it. Thanks to modern manufacturing (制造业) and technology, companies are able to produce products quickly and inexpensively. Products are plentiful and cheap. Another cause is our love of disposable (一次性的) products. As busy people, we are always looking for ways to save time and make our lives easier. Companies produce thousands of different kinds of disposable products: paper plates, plastic cups, and cameras, to name a few. Our appetite for new products also contributes to the problem. We are addicted to buying new things. Advertisements persuade us that newer is better and that we will be happier with the latest products. The result is that we throw away useful possessions to make room for new ones. All around the world, we can see the consequences of this throwaway lifestyle. Mountains of rubbish just keep getting bigger. To decrease the amount of rubbish and to protect the environment, more governments are requiring people to recycle materials. However, this is not enough to solve our problem. Maybe there is another way out. We need to repair our possessions instead of throwing them away. We also need to rethink our attitudes towards spending. Repairing our possessions and changing our spending habits may be the best way to reduce the amount of rubbish and take care of our environment. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you're worried that too much “screen time ”could badly influence your child's intelligence, new research suggests you might be right. By analyzing the data gathered from over 4,500U. S. kids aged 8 to 11 between 2016 and 2017,Jeremy Walsh,a postdoctoral fellow with the CHEO Research Institute in Ottawa, found that too much “screen time” could be harming your child's intelligence. Kids with the sharpest intellects spent less than two hours a day on their cellophanes, tablets and computers coupled with 9 to 11 hours of sleep and at least an hour of physical activity. Too much screen time could be affecting kids ability to focus, especially if they are switching between apps on a device or between different screens at the same time, Walsh suggested. “ One leading theory is that much time on screens is spent multitasking using multiple apps or devices at once,” he said. “This can interfere with a child's ability to focus and keep interest on a task. It can be damaging the building blocks for good cognition(认知).” Sleep is important for brain development, since that's when the brain reorganizes itself and grows, Walsh added. Besides, exercise has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain and oxygenation of brain tissues, and increases the connectivity of networks in the brain. Too much screen time could lead to a“ cascade”(瀑布) effect where kids don't get enough sleep and then are less active during the day.“ You can see how this would have an impact on brain health,” Walsh said. What should parents do? Walsh advised setting firm rules about the use of screens including how long children are using the screens, the kinds of apps they are using and how many screens they are using at once. Concerned parents also should preview games or apps before letting their child play, seek out more interactive(交互的)options that engage the child's mind, and use parental controls to block or filter content and limit screen time. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Is a knife useful instrument or a dangerous weapon? It depends on how it is used. It’s the same with technology and one of those greatest inventions is cell phones. They have revolutionized the human existence. This is possible only because they are getting cheaper and cheaper. The technology has made it even easier to give them a longer life. Undoubtedly, if cell phones are in right hands, no matter how far we are setting we can talk anytime anywhere! We can watch favourite TV shows, listen to favourite songs, etc, as cell phones are equipped with all high-tech features. In fact, it’s good to parents as well as children. Parents can monitor their children and children are also safe. If anyone is an any ind of danger, ahe or he can call for help immediately. There are always two sides of a coin. The technology has caused a danger that we keep ignoring. The cell phones have progressed rapidly and at the same time they provide us with more tasks than what we would attempt. When a person is multitasking rather than complete a single task, this causes burden and results in stress. Also cell phones have made terrorist attacks in the world very easy. Besides, children spend much of their time in playing games instead of going out and playing, which is very harmful to them. We should always remember that there lives a wise man between the valley of two mountains. Are cell phones a useful instrument or a dangerous weapon? The answer lies in our hands. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Christmas was hanging around. Six-year-old David was thinking what presents he could get from Santa. He wanted slippers; he wanted a silk tie; he wanted some toys. And school starting soon, he also hoped to get something about schooling. In order to get Santa to know what he needed, he thought he would write a letter to Santa, which he believed would bring him those presents. He found a sheet and made a list of the items on it, and then bent down to post the letter up the chimney, waiting for the winds to take it up. David got up very early on the Christmas morning. He searched his room carefully, but to his disappointment, he didn't find the presents he hoped for. Hadn't Santa received the letter? Was he too busy to send him the gifts? Although feeling a little upset, David was convinced that Santa would not forget him and he was bound to receive the items. Many years had passed and 2019 came. In an old house, a young builder, Lewis Shaw was removing the fireplace with his colleagues when he suddenly found a small piece of paper, which was still in perfect condition even if it had turned yellow. He picked it up and unfolded it. It was a letter written to Santa. The touching hand-written note read: Dear Father Christmas , Please can you send me a drum , box of chalks , slippers , silk tie , pencil box , any little toys you have to spare. Love David It was then signed off with lots of kisses. This was the very letter written by David and the house was where he had lived during his childhood! The letter struck Shaw so much. How simple Christmas once was! David didn't ask for much, just the things he just needed. Nowadays kids always wanted expensive gifts and took it for granted. Paragraph 1: Shaw decided to find out the author of the letter. When I was seven years old, I went into my parent’s bedroom and saw my mother sitting at her sewing machine making doll clothes. When I asked her who the doll clothes were for, she told me that they were for the poor people, so I never gave it another thought. On the Christmas morning when I opened my present, there were those beautiful doll clothes. I said to her, “I thought the doll clothes were for the poor people.” My mother just smiled and said, “They are for the poor people. We’re poor.” When I was nine years old my greatest desire in life was to own a pogo stick(弹簧单高跷). I had recently learned to walk on a pair of sticks my dad had made for me, and I thought that if I had a pogo stick surely I would be proud of my unbelievable skills. When Christmas season rolled around again, I told my mother that the only thing I wanted was a pogo stick. My mother told me they were too expensive and that we simply couldn’t afford one. On a Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks before Christmas, my mom and dad told me we needed to go to Sears to pay our credit bill. While my mother and I were at the counter paying the bill, my dad said, “I’ll be right back. I need to see something in the tool department.” After the bill was taken care of, my mother and I went ahead and got in the truck. Soon my dad came walking out with a long box. I remember wondering at that very moment if it was a pogo stick in that box. When we arrived back at home, my dad put the box in the barn(谷仓). While my parents were busy with their things, I walked out to the barn and found the box. I was so excited and I knew that as soon as I opened that magical box my bright shiny pogo stick would appear. No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom. And so Christmas morning was both great and disappointing. I got some nice gifts but I didn’t get the present that I really wanted. Paragraph 1: After all the wrapping(包装) paper was cleaned up, my dad said he needed to tend to something in the barn. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: I couldn’t believe how they were able to get the money for it and how they tricked me with the broom. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
