Tail Spin

Two dolphins race around in a big pool in the Ocean Park. The smaller dolphin, Grace, shows off a few of her tricks, turning around and waving hello to the crowd. The most amazing thing about her, however, is that she’s even swimming at all. She doesn’t have a tail.

Grace lost her tail as a baby when she got caught up in a fish trap. When the dolphin arrived at the Ocean Park in December 2005, she was fighting for her life. “Is she going to make it?” Her trainer, Abbey Stone, feared the worst. Grace did make it — but her tail didn’t. She ended up losing her flukes and the lower part of her peduncle.

Over the past six years, she has learned to swim without her tail. Dolphins swim by moving their flukes and peduncle up and down. Grace taught herself to move another way-like a fish! She pushed herself forward through the water by moving her peduncle from side to side.

The movements put harmful pressure on Grace’s backbone. So a company offered to create a manmade tail for her. The tail had to be strong enough to stay on Grace as she swam but soft enough that it wouldn’t hurt her.

The first time Grace wore the artificial tail, she soon shook it off and let it sink to the bottom of the pool. Now, she is still learning to use the tail. Some days she wears it for an hour at a time, others not at all. “The new tail isn’t necessary for her to feel comfortable,” says Stone, “but it helps to keep that range of motion (动作) and build muscles.”

Now, the dolphin is about to get an even happier ending. This month, Grace will star in Dolphin Tale, a film that focuses on her rescue and recovery. Her progress has inspired more than just a new movie. Many people travel from near and far to meet her. Seeing Grace swim with her manmade tail gives people so much courage.

A.physical build B.potential ability

C.chance of survival D.adaptation to the surroundings.

2.A manmade tail is created for Grace to ________.

C.adjust her way of swimming D.help her perform better tricks

3.The story of Grace inspires people to ________.

C.treasure what they have D.face difficulties bravely

4.Where does the text probably come from?

A.a pet advertisement B.A news story

C.a novel D.a travel guide

There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade,” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include a hierarchy (等级) of responsibilities and unconditional love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.

Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friend: don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying.

While some adult relationships are still troubled, many find them to be extremely rewarding. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of the workforce and technology, which may bring them even closer together.

Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. The mother and child relationship is closer than any other. There is not an equal relationship. Daughters should not feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. It isn’t that they don’t care deeply about their mothers. It’s just that they shouldn’t be burdened with their mother’s well-being.

The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. Mothers always “trump (胜过)” friends.

1.What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.Differ. B.Prevent.

C.Benefit. D.Change.

2.What do we know from the text?

A.The mother and daughter relationship can be replaced by a best friend.

B.A mother’s love brings her and her daughter a close friendship.

C.The mother and daughter relationship goes beyond best friends’ friendship.

D.Marina has a troubled relationship with her mother.

3.How does the author mainly prove his statements?

A.By listing data. B.By giving explanations.

C.By quoting sayings. D.By making comparisons.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.How to Be a Good Mother and Daughter?

B.Who Is a Mother’s Best Friend?

C.Mothers or Friends?

D.Can a Mother Be a Daughter’s Best Friend?

LONDON — A British judge on Thursday sentenced a businessman who sold fake bomb detectors (探测器) to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences.

It is believed that James McCormick got about $ 77.8 million from the sales of his detectors — which were based on a kind of golf ball finder — to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia. McCormick, 57, was convicted of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London.

“Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people,” Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.”

The detectors, sold for up to $ 42, 000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use.

McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.

“I never had any bad results from customers,” he said.

1.Why was McCormick sentenced to prison?

A.He sold bombs.

B.He caused death of people.

C.He made detectors.

D.He cheated in business.

2.According to the judge, what McCormick had done    .

A.increased the cost of safeguarding

B.lowered people’s guard against danger

C.changed people’s idea of social security

D.caused innocent people to commit crimes

3.Which of the following is true of the detectors?

A.They have not been sold to Africa

B.They have caused many serious problems.

C.They can find dangerous objects in water.

D.They don’t function on the basis of science.

4.It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick        .

A.sold the equipment at a low price

B.was well-known in most countries

C.did not think he had committed the crime

D.had not got such huge profit as mentioned in the text

A new study suggests that the timing of a wound affects the speed at which it heals (治愈). Wounds suffered during the day heal around 60 percent faster than those at night.

The study showed how the bodies’ circadian rhythm (昼夜节奏) controlled the healing of wounds. 1. It tells our bodies when to wake up, eat and sleep in a circle — a series of activities that repeat themselves day after day. 2.

In the study, researchers found that skin cells moved faster to repair wounds suffered during the day. Their findings were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The researchers examined cells, mice, and burn injury databases. 3.

Night-time burns — burns suffered between 8 o’clock at night and 8 o’clock the next morning — were 95 percent healed after an average of 28 days.

But after on average of 17 days, daytime burns — burns suffered between 8 o’clock in the morning and 8 at night — were 95 percent healed. 4.

Wounds are very costly to treat. 5. In Britain’s National Health Services, for example, such services cost around $6.56 billion per year. Experts say the high cost result, in part, from a lack of drugs that speed up the closure of wounds.

A.Each cycle lasts about 24 hours.

B.The circadian rhythm is like a clock or timer.

C.Specifically, their investigation found the following information.

D.The new study’s findings could help scientists develop better drugs.

E.In other words, night-time injuries took an average of 11 days longer to heal.

F.Worldwide, billions of dollars are spent every year on wound-treatment services.

G.That’s what a group of researchers from a university in Canada recently published.
