Why do people listen to music? The answer may seem simple: Music is pleasant to make and to hear. But music touches our lives in many other ways, too. Music changes our mood My brother doesn’t choose music based on what he wants to hear. Instead, he decides what he wants to feel and picks music with that mood in mind. Upbeat, bright-sounding music generally makes people feel happy. But some people enjoy listening to sad music, too. It can be like talking with a friend who understands your suffering. But for some people, sad music can make them feel even sadder. Music helps us get things done Do you ever listen to music while you work? I do, and I find that it sometimes helps me concentrate, According to one expert, music can help you pay attention during boring or repeated tasks. But when you are doing tasks that require more thought, music can disturb you, making them harder. My mom, a preschool teacher, uses music to manage her classroom. When she wants to call a child, instead of yelling the child's name, she sings it. This creates a more positive environment, while still getting the child’s attention. Music brings people together Music can also bring people closer to each other. This is especially true of music played live. Live music often features a group of people playing different instruments which makes it a shared experience. Listeners can share in the emotions the song expresses. They also create memories together. And speaking of memories, lots of people connect music with specific places, people or events. Whenever they hear a certain song, they are transported back to some point in the past. Thus music can connect people not only to people who are present but also to people from their past. Music is far more than just entertainment; it is a powerful force that affects us in many ways. 1.Why do some people enjoy sad music? A.It can get their attention. B.It makes them feel happy. C.It can be like talking with a friend. D.It makes them feel sadder. 2.Listening to music disturbs you when ________. A.you are doing repeated tasks. B.the tasks are boring. C.you are doing easy tasks. D.the tasks require more thought. 3.What’s the author’s attitude to music? A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Uncertain. D.Negative.

It has been two months since I moved to China, but its digital advancement hasn’t stopped impressing me ever since. One of the major things that I cannot imagine living without anymore is mobile payment. There are two major mobile payment apps here, Alipay and Wechat Pay. Both have similar payment features, though Wechat is more like a social media. That’s why I will focus on this “super app”. So far, I’ve been overwhelmed by how convenient life can be with Wechat. It is present in every aspect of people’s daily life, from paying water and electricity bills, meals, cinema tickets to hailing a taxi, following news, and chatting with friends. Most merchants have adopted it, from tiny local street food stalls to high-end stores. A cashier may be surprised if you do not pay with Wechat or Alipay at the grocers or in restaurants. And it seems like the entire payment industry has encouraged this shift to mobile payment, equipping payment terminals (终端) with QR code scanners to simplify payments. Mobile payments are so common here that I realize that I can perfectly survive if I forget my wallet at home one day because most days I just don’t take it out of my bag! As mentioned earlier, Wechat is also a major social media platform with about one billion daily users, which is more than the entire population of the European Union. So I have to say Chinese technological and digital development is a real miracle. 1.What does the underlined word mean in Paragragh 2? A.encouraged. B.shocked. C.confused. D.panicked. 2.What can we learn from the passage? A.Wechat is more a social media than Alipay. B.All merchants have adopted mobile payment. C.A cashier may be surprised if you pay with Wechat or Alipay. D.It causes trouble if you don’t take your wallet with you. 3.The best title of the passage might be ________. A.The Different Pinions About Mobile Payment B.The Development of Mobile Payment C.The Popularity of Chinese Mobile Payment D.Two Major Apps of Mobile Payment

Many schools now serve breakfast as well as lunch. A lot of kids who take part can end up eating two breakfasts one at home and one at school. People are concerned that these kids may become overweight. In fact, Marlene Schwartz, a psychologist who studies the phenomenon (现象) of overweight, notes that’s not what her data has shown in her new study. Her group studied some 600 middle school students. Over three years, students in fifth, sixth and seventh grades were asked about their breakfast. Throughout the study bout 34 to 44 percent of all students said they regularly ate breakfast at home. Up to 17 percent or almost one in every six kids regularly ate breakfast at school. Overall, about one in every 10 kids reported having breakfast both at home and at school. And eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school. Indeed, the study found no evidence of greater weight gain among students who ate double breakfasts. Rather, it found that students who skipped breakfast were those most likely to be overweight. Skipping breakfast may set people to be over-hungry later in the day. Then someone may eat more food than their body needs. It might take the brain longer to realize “you have enough food and can stop eating now”. If true, skipping breakfast may actually lead a person to consume too many calories (卡路里) over the rest of the day. “Earlier studies have shown this to be the case. The total calories taken in 24 hours are less when you eat a good breakfast,” says Diana Cutts, who works at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. “Eating healthily in the morning is really what you need to have energy. Skipping breakfast is not good for your body and brain.” 1.Which is true according to Marlene Schwartz’s study? A.One in every ten kids had breakfast at school. B.Eating habits didn’t change as kids got older. C.Kids having breakfast were more likely to be overweight. D.Having double breakfasts doesn’t mean gaining greater weight. 2.What may cause overweight in children who skip breakfast? A.The poor function of the body. B.Eating too much later in the day. C.Eating too much unhealthy food. D.Lack of calory-burning exercise. 3.What do Diana Cutts’ words tell us? A.The importance of energy. B.The harm of calory intake. C.The harm of light breakfast. D.The importance of breakfast. 4.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.Causes of childhood overweight. B.Ways to keep a healthy weight. C.Skipping breakfast may lead to overweight. D.Eating double breakfasts is healthier.

Being sick at college is no fun at all. It means missing classes and social events and then catching up on work. Maintaining physical health as well as mental health is as likely to determine students’ happiness and success as anything else. 1. 1. Wash your hands. It is the easiest way to prevent catching colds from roommates and friends. 2. 2. Drink water. Coffee may wake you up, but water will keep you going. Replace at least a cup of coffee with one glass of water each day. Or, better yet, drink a cup of water for every cup of coffee you consume daily. You will feel better. 3. 3. Sometimes students’ schedules prevent them from having “normal” meals at “normal” times. 4. 4. Track your sleep. Staying up late and then getting up early for class the next day works for about one night. The quickest way to run down your body is to not provide sufficient nourishment through food, water and sleep. 5. 5. Every college offers academic support as well as mental health services. Thankfully, much of the shame of seeing an adviser has decreased, and students are more willing to get help sooner. Unfortunately, many students wait until they are very unhappy, and then the road to recovery is longer. A.Examine your physical health regularly. B.Here are a few tips on how you can stay healthy at college. C.Just carry a water bottle in your backpack and fill it up regularly. D.You must be careful about your health at college. E.Check out student services. F.It makes sense to wash before eating and to carry a small container of hand cleanser. G.Carry some healthy snacks that will satisfy you until your next meal.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。 When I was a teenager, I got lost in a foreign country. I was in Berlin, Germany, only month-long trip in Europe. My team and I had one night there to spend however we pleased. Most of my teammates decided to stay indoors and relax. But I did not want to pass up the chance to explore Berlin. I visited lots of major attractions around the city that night. When the exhaustion began to set in, I checked the time on my watch. I was surprised to see that it was two o’clock in the morning. As I walked to a subway station, I realized that it was my dad’s birthday. This would be the first birthday I couldn’t celebrate with him because he died a few months earlier. Before I could begin thinking of my dad, I heard train wheels stop. I rushed onto the train. At first, I was thankful to have made it onto the train. But that joy quickly turned to panic when I noticed that the train was heading in the wrong direction! I looked around the nearly empty train. I saw a young woman sitting quietly by the window and approached her. “Hi, do you speak English? I’m lost. Can you help me?” I asked. The woman understood. She told me how to return to where I had first gotten on the train. But my anxious mind couldn’t follow her guidance. Without thinking, I asked, “Can you come with me?” Her face froze at my stupid request. After a long second of hesitation, she agreed to help me. At that moment, I was grateful for the kindness from a stranger. 注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为100左右; 2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好,不计入总词数。 Paragraph 1: On the journey back to the train station I got on, she and I chatted. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Finally, we reached my stop. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
