When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never shouted at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind. When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pains, no gains". He hardly watered his new trees, which greatly went against conventional (守旧的) wisdom. Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things hard for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how trees, if they were not watered, would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention. Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty five years ago. They were all tall and strong. I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could. Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often hope that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my idea. I know my children are going to meet with hard times. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to hope for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart. 1.With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often __________. A.kept watering them every day B.paid very little attention to them C.beat them to make them grow tall D.talked to them to get their attention 2.What does the underlined word “Adversity” in the 4th paragraph probably mean? A.A happy moment. B.An important position. C.A difficult situation. D.A dirty environment. 3.What does the author wish for his sons? A.Meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future. B.Have an easy, happy and comfortable life. C.Have good luck, meeting no hardship at all. D.Be able to stand the rain and wind in their lives. 4.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A.Growing Roots B.Doctor Gibbs’ Trees C.Watering Trees D.Helping My Sons

There are five simple ways for your family to lead a healthy lifestyle and get back on track: Get active each day Regular physical activity is important for the healthy growth, development and well-being of children and young people. They should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, including activities that strengthen muscles and bones on at least 3 days of the week. Parents should be good rule models and have a positive attitude to being active. Choose water as a drink Water is the best way to satisfy your thirst – and it doesn‘t come with the added sugar found in fruit juices, soft drinks and other sweetened drinks. Reduced fat milk for children over two years of age is a nice drink. Give kids whole fruit to eat, rather than offering fruit juices that have a lot of sugar. Eat more fruit and vegetables Eating fruit and vegetables every day helps children and young people grow and develop, and can reduce the risk of many diseases. Eat two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day. This varies for boys and girls at different ages. Switch off the screen and get active Children and young people should spend no more than two hours a day on small screen‘ entertainment. Break up long periods of use as often as possible. Plan some active indoor and outdoor games or activities for your children. Eat fewer snacks and select healthier choices Healthy snacks help children and young people meet their daily nutritional needs. Snacks based on fruit and vegetables, reduced fat dairy products and whole grains are the healthiest choices. Avoid snacks that are high in sugar or fat –such as chips, cakes and chocolate – which can cause children to put on extra weight. 1.What should parents do to help their children to be active every day? A.Set good examples themselves. B.Let children know the importance. C.Give children enough time outdoors. D.Stop children from using the computer. 2.Which comes last when served to children? A.Boiled water. B.Whole fruit. C.Soft drinks. D.Reduced fat milk. 3.How many serves of fruit should children have each day? A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four. 4.Who is the text mainly intended for? How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone. The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a doctor actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor. The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications(应用) on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters(怪物) among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says. Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed. The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, depending on features. The U.S. is the first target market. Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush. 1.Which is one of the features of the Kolibree toothbrush? A.It can sense how users brush their teeth. B.It can track users’ school performance. C.It can cause users’ fear of seeing a doctor. D.It can help users find their phones. 2.What can we learn from Serval’s words in Paragraph 3? A.You will find it enjoyable to see a doctor. B.You should see your doctor on a day-to-day basis. C.You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a doctor. D.You’d like a doctor to watch you brush your teeth every day. 3.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about? A.How Serval found out his kids lied to him. B.Why Serval thought brushing teeth was necessary. C.How Serval taught his kids to brush their teeth. D.What inspired Serval to invent the toothbrush. 4.What can we learn about the future development of the Kolibree? A.The brush handle will be removed. B.A mobile phone will be built into it. C.It will be used to fill holes in teeth. D.It will be able to check users’ teeth.

Daban town is famous for girls and windmills, while Loulan is a mystery in the desert. Two thousand years ago, beside the beautiful Luobu Lake, there lay Loulan ancient city of the Silk Road. Businessmen from every country gathered there with lots of dancing parties. Everything shows that people in Loulan lived a rich life at that moment. However, two thousand years later, this rich land suddenly disappeared from the map of China. It became an area covered with sand and dead tree trunks (树干). Loulan was first “discovered” by a Swedish man named Sven Hedin in 1900, and people from America, Britain, Japan and Sweden all set foot here. Then in the 1930s, a Chinese named Huang Wenbi came to Loulan for the first time. He visited and studied this area and found many relics that were beautifully and carefully made. It is recorded that the ancient city of Loulan was the capital of the Loulan Kingdom during the Han and Jin Dynasties, and covered an area of some 10, 000 square kilometres. Inside the city, there are the ruins of government offices, temples and other old buildings. Outside the city there are some dried-up rivers and much farmland. In the past century many things have been dug up there including Han Dynasty coins, mirrors and many others of Greek and Roman times. All these things show that a lot of business between the East and the West once took place there. Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time.1. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the languages he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people‘s. 2.They learn to do without being taught--to walk, run, climb, whistle, and even ride a bicycle. They compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his own mistakes and correct them for himself.3. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants, what this word says, what answer is to that problem, and whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not. If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book.4. Why should we teachers waste time on such daily work? 5. Let the children learn what all educated people must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know. A.We do it all for him. B.Point out his mistakes. C.Let him correct his own papers. D.If corrected too much, he will stop talking. E.We allow him to learn from other children. F.Children learn to do all the other things in the same way. G.We can only help the child when he has no way to solve a problem.
