The Top 4 Beaches on the East Coast

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Great point, at the easternmost end of the island of Nantucket, is one of the most secret beaches in the world. That's because you need a fourwheel drive vehicle and a beach permit to get there. Once you do, you'll find miles of beachfront and a historic lighthouse.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Accessible by ferry, Block Island oozes New England charm. It's worth the effort to get to Mohegan Bluffs, where you can experience a set of 141 wooden steps leading down to the sand. With clay cliffs and a view that reaches Montauk at the eastern tip of Long Island, this beach is especially unique.

East Hampton, New York

Named the best beach in the county in 2013, Main Beach in East Hampton is known for its wide stretch of sand plus a snack bar, bathrooms, and lockers. Onsite parking is only available to village residents but there are free beach shuttles available.

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Located off the coast of Georgia, this 5, 700acre barrier island is famous for its nesting sea turtles and hermit crabs.     Sarah got a sudden sinking feeling, and she could sense approaching danger. Without thinking she stood up, and faced toward the direction of the sound. That's when she saw a gray tail through the bushes. Desperately Sarah climbed up a tall pine tree. She knew its smell would be of some help. The merciless creature stepped in, sniffing around.

The branch cracking slightly, the wolf looked around, then up and made direct eye contact with Sarah. It gave a short howl, and then two more large wolves came running. Sarah grabbed a branch and threw it far behind them, who dashed after it, but weren't gone for long. They had realized they were tricked. They started jumping at her legs, and the worst happened. The branch, her lifeline, gave out on her and she landed onto the ground, nearly on top of the lead wolf. They immediately surrounded her, glaring at her in the eyes. She raised her head, thinking to herself, "If this is the way I am going to die, I might as well die with dignity." Grabbing the branch that betrayed her, she stood up, smacking it around, and the wolves began backing up.

Finally she was able to get out of the circle, and ran over to a spot with a bunch of empty bottles. She tied one to each fist, and then smashed them on a rock so that if she hit one of the wolves, the broken glass would cause a lot more damage. Meanwhile, Sarah grabbed a branch and was able to reach out and smack the lead wolf in the face. He fell down and the other wolves began sniffing at him, then she rushed as fast as possible. "I will never be able to outrun them, but I have to try", she thought to herself. She ran as if she never ran before. Finally the wolves were out of sight.

The sharing economy has grown in recent years to include everything from apartment sharing to car sharing to community tool sharing. Since 2009, a new form of sharing economy has been emerging in neighborhoods throughout the US and around the world-Little Free Libraries. The libraries are boxes placed in neighborhoods where residents can take out and leave books. Little Free Libraries come in all shapes and sizes. Some libraries also have themes, focusing on books for children, adults, or tour guides.

In 2009, Tod Bol built the first Little Free Library as a gift to his mother, a devoted reader.     There is a truth generally acknowledged by drivers in India, honk your horn (按喇叭) loud enough and the traffic light will surely change to green. But, fed up with the drivers who have no patience and cause a deafening noise every time they are forced to stop, the police in Mumbai have come up with a new system to punish those people. The new system, said the police, was quite simple: “Honk more, wait more.”

Known as “the punishing signal”, the Mumbai police fixed a new traffic light system to deal with the problem of “reckless honkers”, which resets the red traffic signal every time the sound of car horns goes above 85 decibels. For particularly honk- happy drivers, it could mean a very long wait at the lights.

Mumbai was recently listed as the fourth most congested city in the world, according to the TomTom traffic index, with 65% congestion and drivers spending an average of eight days and 17 hours in traffic each year. Speaking to local media, Mumbai traffic police commissioner Madhukar Pandey said, “Sadly, many Mumbaikars are addicted to reckless honking which not only causes noise pollution, but hurts eardrums, increases heart rates, causes stress and adds to traffic disturbance.”

He added, “All recognize it, but do little to control it. With this, I am sure that our road discipline can become better and the new system ensures honk-less, noise-free and stress free travel on Mumbai roads.”

The idea, which was tested in November and December, 2019, has already gained momentum and there is a plan for rolling it out in other cities in India. Across the country, Indian cities have the worst traffic in the world. Bangalore was recently named as the world’s most congested city, with drivers spending an average of 10 days stuck in traffic, while both Delhi and Pune were also in the top 10.

2.What information can you get from Madhukar Pandey’s words?

A.The new traffic light system has many disadvantages.

B.He thinks that the new traffic system is useful.

C.It is too late to carry out the new traffic light system.

D.It’s difficult to deal with overuse of horns in Mumbai.

3.According to the last paragraph, we can know that ________.

A.the new traffic system works well

B.Delhi’s traffic condition is better than that of Pune

C.the new traffic system will be spread around the world

D.people of Bangalore like to honk their horns when driving

4.What is the best title for this passage?

B.Mumbai Warns Honk-happy Drivers by Traffic Lights

C.Honk-happy Drivers Will Have No Way to Drive

D.“Honk More. Wait More”: Mumbai Tests Traffic Lights
