5-second rule:what’s the truth? Almost everyone has dropped some food on the floor and still wanted to eat it. If someone saw you drop it, he or she might have shouted, “5-second rule!”This so-called rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up in five seconds or less. But is that true? Professor Anthony Hilton from Ashton University, UK, tested the rule with his students. They found that food dropped for five seconds is less likely to contain bacteria(细菌) than if it sits there for longer. For the study, Hilton and his students tested a lot of food—bread, pasta, cookies and candy—to see how much bacteria they had when they made contact with the floor. They allowed the food to lie on various types of flooring-carpet, laminate(复合地板), and tile (瓷砖) for three seconds to 30 seconds. Not surprisingly, the longer the food was on the floor, the more bacteria it had. And the type of floor where the dropped food landed had an effect. Bacteria are least likely to transfer from carpet, while they’re most likely to transfer from laminate or tiled surfaces after more than five seconds. The study also found that the wetter the food, the more likely it was to pick up bacteria. Although most people are happy to follow the 5-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still carried an infection(感染) risk. “It very much depends on which bacteria are on the floor at the time,” Hilton told Forbes. 1.What is the “5-second rule” about? A. People often shout at someone when they drop food on the floor. B. Food is safe when you pick up off the floor in less than five seconds. C. It’s better to eat dropped food when it’s been on the floor for over five seconds. D. Food will go bad when dropped on the floor in five second or less. 2.Hilton’s test wanted to find out ________. A. if the “5-second rule” is true B. the students’ favourite food C. which food is easily dropped D. if different types of floor have different bacteria 3.According to the test, we learn the following EXCEPT ________. A. the dropped food had more bacteria if it sat on the floor for longer B. the dropped food on carpet had the least bacteria C. bacteria was impossible to transfer from laminate or tied surfaces D. the wetter food was more likely to pick up bacteria 4.According to the article, the infection risk of the dropped food does NOT depend on _______. A. how long the food sits on the floor B. what the dropped food was C. what the bacteria are D. what the weather is like that day

Many of us have a certain pose for photos, but have you ever noticed which side you naturally turn? According to US science writer Sam Kean, people tend to turn to the right and show the left side of their faces. That might be because the left side of our faces looks better than our right side. This may have something to do with our brain. The right side of the brain, which controls the left side of the body, deals more with emotions. So the left half of faces are often more expressive(富有表现力的), The Atlantic reported. During studies, it is found that more than 60 percent of famous paintings since the 14th century showed people’s left side of the face. But when it comes to self-portraits, artists have traditionally drawn themselves from the right. Yet this doesn’t mean the left side phenomenon(现象) is wrong. As Professor Marco Bertamini from Liverpool University explained, self-portraits are usually painted through a mirror. For example, if an artist shows his left side to a mirror, and draws what he can see, the final picture on the paper would show the head facing to the right. The front-facing camera on smart phones works the same way as a mirror. When people take selfies(自拍照) using a front-facing camera, most of them take a photo with their head facing to the right. “Our results show that a preference(偏爱) for self-portraits showing one’s left side, even if this appears as a right face in the mirror-reversed(反转的)display,”Bertamini told The Guardian. Next time, when you take a photo, remember to show your better side to the camera. 1.Why do people like to show the left side of their faces for photos? A. It’s much easier for us to make a pose. B. It makes people look more natural on photos. C. The left side of our faces looks better. D. The left side of our faces look friendlier. 2.From Paragraph 3, we learn that __________. A. the right side of the brain controls the right side of our faces B. the right side of the brain deals with our emotions C. the right side of our faces looks more expressive D. our brain decides whether we look good or not 3.Which of the following is TRUE? A. Artists usually draw themselves from the left. B. There is also the left side phenomenon in self-portraits. C. The front-facing camera on smart phones doesn’t take good photos. D. Bertamini tells people how to take better selfies. 4.What does the article mainly talk about? A. Where to take good photos. B. How the left side of the brain works. C. How to draw yourself better. D. Why we show off the left side of our faces in photos.

阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后表格。在答题卡标有题号的横线上,写出空缺处所填单词的正确形式。(每空一词) What do we really mean by being open? Being open is a kind of invitation to others to come in, to speak and to share. It is important in letting others get to know how we think and feel. In this way we will be understood and accepted by others. If we aren’t open with others, we won’t fully believe in ourselves or others. Here are a few ways for you to be more open. First, make your outside behavior the same with your inside feelings and thoughts. Second, share how you really feel about something instead of just opinions. Third, try to change your questions into statements(陈述句) and talk in the first person so that people will understand you more easily. For example, you might say, “I feel happy that you’re here,” instead of, “Are you glad that you’re here?” Finally, try not to say, “I don’t know.” This usually means I don’t want to think about it anymore. Remember also that it is not suitable to be open with everyone in every situation. You may want to be more open with close friends, but not with people you don’t know well, because you are not sure how someone else will use what they know about you. Besides, some people may not be used to too much openness. If we say everything we feel or think to them, they will feel very uncomfortable at times. In all, being open is a good way for us to get on well with other people, but we’d better keep the balance between being open and not being too open.
