It's a good time for a theme park, according to a report. There was a four percent growth in the number of visitors to theme parks in 2014 compared with 2013. There were a total of 223,450,000 visits to the top 25 theme parks in 2014. But even extreme enthusiasts may not be able to get to every park on the top-25 list. I had worried myself sick over Simon’s mother coming to see me. I was a new teacher, and I gave an honest account of the students’ work. In Simon’s case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn’t read his own handwriting. But he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his abilities.

So when Simon’s mother entered the room, my palms (手掌心) were sweating. I was completely unprepared for her kisses on both my cheeks. “I came to thank you,” she said, surprising me beyond speech. Because of me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he loved me, he had begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had recently spent an afternoon at a friend’s house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the self-respect I had developed in her son. She kissed me again and left.

I sat, stunned, for about half an hour, wondering what had just happened. How did I make such a life changing difference to that boy without even knowing it?What I finally came to remember was one day, several months before, when some students were giving reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke quietly, and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon’s the expert on this. He is the only one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the back of the room.” That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, smiled more, and became happy. And it was all because he happened to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed praise was the one who took the last seat that day.

It taught me the most valuable lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came early and positively. A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

1.We can infer that when Simon’s mother entered the room, the writer felt ______.

A. satisfied   B. nervous  C. happy       D. surprised

2. The following words can be used to describe Simon before he met the writer except ______.

A. unconfident  B. lonely  C. outgoing     D. clever

3.What the teacher said in paragraph 3 is intended to ______.

A. encourage Jeanne to speak louder

B. encourage Simon to work hard

C. ask Jeanne to convince Simon

D. tell the students that Simon was expert on that

4.The purpose of the passage is to ______.

A. tell the story of Simon

B. tell teachers how to be kind to students

C. advise the readers to be kind to others

D. share a valuable lesson with readers

Ask most people anywhere in the world what they want out of life and the reply will probably be: “to be happy.” Ed Deiner, an American psychology professor, has spent his whole professional life studying what makes people happy, comparing levels of happiness between cultures and trying to find out exactly why we enjoy ourselves.

Many people would say that this question does not need an answer. But Professor Deiner has one anyway. “If you’re a cheerful, happy person, your marriage is more likely to last, and you’re more likely to make money and be successful at your job. On average, happy people have stronger immune systems, and there is some evidence that they live longer.”

So who are the world's happiest people? It depends on how the word is defined. There is individual happiness, the sense of joy we get when we do something we like. But there is also the feeling of satisfaction we get when we know that others respect us and approve of how we behave. According to Professor Deiner, the Western world pursues individual happiness while Asia prefers mutual (相互的,彼此) satisfaction.

“In the West, the individualistic culture means that your mood matters much more than it does in the East. People ask themselves if they are doing what is fun or interesting. They become unhappy when they can’t do any of these things. If you ask people from Japan or China if they are happy, they tend to look at what has gone wrong in their lives. If not much has gone wrong, then they are satisfied.”

People from Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries had the happiest culture, Professor Deiner found. “The biggest cultural difference is to do with pride and shame. Hispanic (西班牙语言的) cultures report much more pride and much less shame than others.”

Income also made a big difference to people’s happiness, but only at the lowest levels. Average income earners in the US were much happier than people in poverty. But millionaires were only a little bit happier than people on average incomes. It seems that money makes us happy when we have enough to feel secure.

1.According to the passage, happy people enjoy the following benefits except ______.

A. a long marriage  B. profession success

C. better health  D. respect from others

2.What can be inferred from the fifth paragraph?

A. Hispanic cultures lay stress on pride and shame.

B. Spanish people take too much pride in themselves.

C. Attitude towards pride and shame results in Spanish happiness.

D. If you are from Spain, you are the happiest.

3. In the last paragraph, the author seems to tell us ______.

A. Poor people enjoy the same happiness as millionaires

B. the higher income one gets, the happier life he lives

C. Enough money can make us feel safe and happy

D. Average income earners live the happiest life

4.The passage mainly discusses ______.

A. cultural differences in happiness

B. reasons for happiness

C. the happiest culture

D. benefits of happiness

During the last summer holiday, my parents and I paid visit to my grandparents by train. There was a large number of people and the train was crowded, but everyone helped those who had lots of baggages and behaved politely. Along the way, we chatted happily and enjoyed beautifully views. At first, we saw one hill after other. Then which came into view were fields with green crops. In a six-hour trip, we arrived at my grandparents’house. Tired as I felt, but I was happy to see my grandparents, whom I haven't seen for a long time. It was really an excited trip because it was the first time that I had taken such a long-distance train.
