Andy was still traveling in Spain when he realized he had to confirm his flight home with the airline company. He was visiting Spain in order to improve his Spanish. When he was speaking to people face to face, he had no difficulty understanding what they said. However, when he was speaking on the phone, he still had a problem. Andy called the airline. And the clerk confirmed that his plane was leaving at nine o'clock three days from that day. She also told Andy to be at the airport two hours earlier in order to check in his luggage and get a seat.

Since he was leaving in three days, Andy didn't lose any time. He visited as many places as he could. He thought that it would probably be a while before he had enough money again. He wished he could come back and spend a year in Spain.

Too quickly, the final day arrived. Andy left early for the airport to arrive two hours before take-off. He hated to rush. He went to the clerk to show his ticket. The clerk looked at the ticket in surprise. "Why, sir, but your flight was at nine o'clock in the morning, and now it is eight in the evening." "But I confirmed my flight," insisted Andy. When we talk about intelligence(智力),we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school.By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving(表现),especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence,we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.

For example, when in a new situation,an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him.He tries to find out all can be,and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it.Probably he isn’t sure how it will all work out,but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right,he doesn’t feel ashamed(羞愧)that he failed,he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook(看法)on life,a special feeling about life, and how he fits into it.

If you look at children, you’ll see the great differences between what we call “bright” children and “non-bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life, and he tries to get in touch with everything around him; while the unintelligent(不聪明的) child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world:he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.

1.According to this passage, intelligence is the ability to_________.

A.get some high scores on some tests

3.If an intelligent person failed,he would_______.

A.try not to feel ashamed

B.learn from his mistakes

C.try to find all he could

I wonder whether there is any girl or boy who does not like to see a rainbow in the sky. It is so beautiful.

There is a story, saying that whenever you see a rainbow you should run at once to the place where it touches the ground, and there you would find a pot of gold. Of course it is not true. You could not find the pot of gold or its end. No matter how far you run, it always seems far away.

A rainbow is not a thing which we can feel with our hands as we can feel a flower. It is only the effect of light shining on raindrops. The raindrops catch the sunlight and break it up into all the wonderful colours which we see. It is called a rainbow perhaps because it is made up of raindrops and looks like a bow(弓).

That is why we can never see a rainbow in a clear sky. We see a rainbow only when there is rain in the air and the sun is shining brightly through the clouds.

Every rainbow has many colours in the same order. The first or the top colour is always red, and the next comes orange, then yellow, and last of all, blue. A rainbow is indeed one of the wonders of nature.
