Light travels at a speed which is about ...

Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance(距离) away from the starter, you can see smoke from his gun before the sound reaches your ears.

This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight(太阳光) takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the 说明: 学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!light rays left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you. Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound.可知光的传播速度比声音的传播速度要快一百万倍;故选D。 2.细节理解题。根据短文第一段最后一句话If you stand some distance(距离) away from the starter, you can see smoke from his gun before the sound reaches your ears.可知,看到烟雾要比听到声音早,即声音和光传播的并不是一样快的,其他三项表述错误;故选B。 3.推理判断题。根据短文第二段Sunlight(太阳光) takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you.两句可知,太阳光传播的距离要远远大于月光;故选A。 4.推理判断题。根据短文最后一句话“The stars look pretty. A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin(顽童) was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, sir?” he asked. Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it did cost you nothing? Sir, I wish…” He hesitated(犹豫). Paul thought of course he knew what the boy wanted, but what the boy said surprised him greatly. “I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again,“Would you like to take a ride in my car?” “Oh yes, I’d love to,” the boy answered.

After a short ride, the boy said and with his eyes shining, “Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house?” Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled(残疾的) brother. He sat down on the step and pointed to the car.

“There he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent.
