Traditionally, there are ten best-known spots on the West Lake. They are called Ten Scenes of West Lake by Qianlong Emperor. The West Lake is divided by three causeways called Su Di, Bai Di, and Yanggong Di. First I want to tell you the history of Bai Di.
In the middle of the Tang Dynasty, Zhen yuan era(785-804), poet Bai Juyi came to Hangzhou as a governor(官员,总督). He realized that the farmland nearby depended on the water of West Lake, but the old dyke(堤防)had collapsed(倒塌), the water of West Lake had dried out, and the local farmers suffered drought. He ordered the construction(修建)of a causeway of a stronger and taller dyke to solve the drought problem. The lives of local people improved over the following years. Then Bai Juyi had more free time to enjoy the beauty of West Lake. He visited West Lake almost every day. This causeway was later named after Bai Di in Bai Juyi's honor.

Below are some suggestions given by the English children posted on the website about how to help Africa. Which do you think is the best?
I think health is the most important thing. We need to make sure that the money we give is spent wisely. The money should be spent first on clean water supplies and better health care. Robin, aged 16, Birmingham |
I think the most important thing is to improve the education of the African countries. There is an old saying, "If you give a man a fish, you'll feed him for a day. If you teach him how to fish, you'll feed him for a lifetime." We need to help themselves, not just throw money at the problem when it appears. Rebecca, aged 15, Liverpool |
People seem to give a lot more money to charity when there is a sudden, huge disaster(灾难)like the earthquake. It's good for people to do so, but I also think that everyone should give a small part of their salary(工资)to charity. If everyone did that, it would make a big difference. Mary, aged 14, Stratford-on-Avon |
Giving money to charity can help, but it's not the final answer. I think what these countries need is a good government. Bethany, aged 16, Newcastle |
The best thing we can do is to send experts(专家)like engineers, doctors and teachers to help the people to help themselves. Robert, aged 16, Cardiff |

Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, it patience(耐心). If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some action. You must first go where there are people. You won't make friends staying home .
Joining a club or group, talking to those who like the same things you do is much easier. Or join someone some activities.
Many people are shy when talking to new people. meeting strangers means seeing the unknown. And it's human nature to feel a bit about the unknown. Most of fears(恐惧)about new people come from doubts(怀疑). We imagine other people are us-finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don't forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept(接受)yourself you are, and try to put the other at ease(自由自在,自然). You'll both feel more comfortable.
Try to act self-confident(自信)even if you don't feel that way when you a room full of strangers. Walk straight, look at other people directly and .
If you see someone you'd like to , say something. Don't wait for person to start a talk.
Just meeting someone does not mean that you'll make friends with that person. Friendship is based on mutual(相互的)likings and "give and take". It takes time to friendship.
