                                                                Yours sincerely,

Mr Nunan, Recently I have had a discussion about the ways to learn English better with Allen, a student from Britain. In his opinion, the best ways are reading English newspapers and talking with friends. He also believes that sometimes seeing English films isn‘t a bad way. I quite agree with him. However, I think, we can go surfing online, where we can find a lot of information in English to read. Besides, we can look for an e-pal from an English-speaking country so that we can get to know something about his or her country. Finally, learning English grammar well is also a great help. 两段中间用“I quite agree with him.”

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. This is why some friendships don’t last long .To have a friend, you must learn to be a good friend. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.

Honesty is where good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust(信任)one another. They should tell the truth. If you aren’t honest, you’ll lose your friend’s trust. (1)A study shows that those who often tell lies can’t get on well with the other people. Good friends always depend on one to speak and act honestly.

Generosity makes a friendship grow well. It means sharing. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend, you must listen and understand(2)Try to put yourself in your friend’s place, or you can’t understand the problem better.

Now, do you know what you should do if you want to be a good friend and keep your friends?

We all know the dangers of fires. It’s good and necessary for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. Here are some suggestions.

Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.

Make escape plans. We should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.

Buy fire extinguishers(灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.

Practise for a fire. We do fire practice because we teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:

Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.

Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire. The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.

What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don’t run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket(毯子) around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.

There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don’t forget to call 119 for help.

You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?

Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can't hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears, so even if you are alone when listening to your MP3 player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high.

Take Them off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away. Libraries and schools don't allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.

Take One Out! Once in a while it's OK just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude  to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it's not for you.

It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.

1.No one wants to listen to_________ from others’ MP3 player.

A. a loud sound                      B. sad stories

C. a long movie                      D. the words of a song

2. We should turn down the music when we are alone because loud music_______.

A. is not enjoyable                    B. makes us tired

C. is bad for MP3 players               D. hurts our ears

3. If we listen to our MP3 player at a play, ________.

A. the teacher won’t allow it             B. the actors will get angry

C. others won’t hear the play well         D. we will miss part of the play

4. We can take one earphone out when we________.

A. show others the way                 B. talk to friends on the phone

C. watch a sporting event                D. have dinner with our parents

5. It's all right to use our MP3 player in______.

A. schools        B. libraries       C. restaurants       D. museums
