A Meaningful Activity Our school has now started an activity called “Build Civilized Classes”. The topic is “Get Rid of Bad Habits and Greet Civilization”. We can still see some bad habits in our school. Some students throw rubbish everywhere or spit in public. Some even love smoking and drinking. We require that the students break away from these bad habits. We advise the students to wear their uniform and be polite to others. During the activity, we have held a picture show, a competition between classes for better environment and behavior, and so on. For those of us who are studying at school, the time of exams is very stressful and difficult. Some people find exam times so bad that they become ill, because they are afraid of failing; they are afraid of letting their parents and family down. If exams are really making you ill or worried, don’t hide your feelings. Talk to someone about it. Maybe you can speak to a friend, or someone in your family, or teachers at your place of study. If one person doesn’t help you, ask someone else.

How to get through exams? Here are some advice:

Ask a teacher or tutor about how to review your lessons, and exam skills—how to work when you are in an exam.

Take short rests during your time of work. If your mind is tired, it will not remember well.

Plan your work: study at times when you know you will work at your best.

Get enough sleep, and eat healthy food.

You need exercise to work well. Walk, run, play sport—whatever you enjoy.

Stop thinking about the future and failing.

If you feel ill, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too relaxed! (84)Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them.

If it upsets you to talk to your friends about an exam when it is finished, don’t do it! In fact, don’t even think about the exam you have finished. What is done is done. You cannot change what you have written!

To this advice, we could add:

If you are studying in the evening, don’t go straight to bed. Your mind will still be “going round and round”—thinking too much. Do something else, maybe walk or get exercise. Choose something that will relax you, and make you think of other things.

A)根据短文内容简要回答问题。

1.Why do some students hate exams?

2.What should you do if the exam upsets you when it is finished?

B)将短文中划线的句子译成汉语。

Mr. Ma, a famous mental doctor from Beijing once said at an important meeting, “Now many young students can have problems with their minds. Some students become worried because they have to study very hard. Others have trouble getting on well with people around them like their parents and classmates. Parents and teachers should care more about this problem.”

Then Mr. Ma gave some examples. One patient, a middle school student from Xi’an, was doing  badly in his lessons. He thought his teachers and friends often laughed at him, and he became so nervous and worried that one night he left his home without telling his parents. Another student, a 14-year-old school girl form Shanghai, was very afraid of exams. While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn’t think of anything to write.

A recent report from Jiefang Daily says about 18% of young students in Shanghai have mental problems. They often feel worried and very unhappy. Unluckily many of them won’t go and ask for help. Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor. Others won’t talk about their secrets.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Ma offered some good ideas to young people:

You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABC? You may like eating bananas. But did you know there is such a thing as a “banana person”? How strange! Are these people from “another earth” ? No. They are just Chinese people like you and me.

ABC means American-born-Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, when a person is a banana, he or she is white inside---hinting like a Westerner(西方人) and yellow outside --- looking like a Chinese.

Do you know why? Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. Also, they are not interested in Chinese politics(政治),But if ABCs can’t speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are Chinese. They are overseas(海外的) Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民) of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. But they are not Chinese citizens. They are not people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C.N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen. www.xkb1.com
