How to be a good detective(侦探)
Have you seen the Hollywood movie Sherlock Holmes? Holmes is a character created by British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His books were so popular that Holmes soon became “the most famous detective in the world”. In this movie, this great detective faces a dangerous man, Lord Blackwood. Together with his best friend Dr Watson, Holmes stops Blackwood’s plan to control the world with black “magic”.
Most of us are not as smart as Holmes. But we can also work out mysteries on our own. All we have to do is to follow some simple rules.
1. No matter how smart he or she is, the most important quality for a detective is being good. In the movie, Lord Blackwood and Sherlock Holmes are both very smart. The difference is that Lord Blackwood is a bad man and he does bad things. Holmes can beat him on the side of justice (正义).
2. Every bad man tries to cover up what he did. But not all things can be covered up easily. A good detective can discover clues hidden at crime scenes with sharp eyes. For example, Holmes can simply look at a man’s footprints and quickly find out his personal information like age and habits.
3.Even though Holmes has knowledge about many subjects , such as chemistry, botany (植物学) and anatomy, he still needs Dr Watson’s help to fight with him. We should also have someone to help you, especially if you don’t know as much as Holmes.
4. A good detective never jumps to conclusions. When all the necessary clues are put together, you’d better think carefully. If you can’t work it out, don’t be afraid. Just take a deep breath and concentrate on thinking. Logic can help you discover missing clues. |
|
A. Have sharp eyes.
B. Logic (逻辑) is the key.
C. A good assistant is a great help.
D. Justice is most important.
5.Holmes is a character created by _______.
A. Lord Blackwood B. Sir Arthur Doyle C. Dr Watson D. Charles Dickens
When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelons were expensive. One of my father's friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie's place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock (码头), feet dangling (摇晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we'd bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, and most seed-free part — and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father's ideal of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie's wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don't take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I'd learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.
Well, I've relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.

Sometimes I really doubt (怀疑) whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to make money in order to pay for my brother's education and mine. They don't act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. For them, “I love you” is too difficult to say. Even sending flowers to each other on some special days is hardly ever seen.
One day, my mother was repairing a quilt. I silently sat beside her and looked at her. “Mom, may I ask you a question?” I said. “What?” she replied, still doing her work. “Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice. My mother stopped her work and looked at me in surprise. She didn't answer my question at once. Then, she bowed her head and continued to do her work.
I was afraid that I had hurt her feelings. I felt so embarrassed that I didn't know what to do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“ Look at this thread (线). Sometimes it appears, but most of the time, it hides in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it's really there."
I couldn't understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale. After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. The doctor had said my father would recover in two months. But after two months he still couldn't walk by himself. All of us were worried about him. "Dad, how are you feeling now?" I asked him one day. "Susan, don't worry about me." he said gently. "To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom. I like this kind of life." Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

Karl Landsteiner first thought of naming blood types in 1900. He put blood into four types. These four blood types were named A, B, AB, and O. Blood type O is the most common around the world. Blood type A is the second most common. and type AB is the least common.
Doctors try to give blood to a person according to the person’s blood type. Blood type O can be given to a person with any other blood type, but doctors also need to make sure that the “RH factor (因子)” in patients’ blood matches the blood they are given. If people have one kind of protein (蛋白质) in their blood, they are RH positive (Rh+). If people do not have the protein, they are Rh negative (Rh-). Most people are Rh+.
If a mother has an Rh- blood type, she may have trouble when she has a baby. If her baby is Rh+, the baby’s blood may mix with the mother’s blood before the baby is born. The mother’s blood will change. If the mother has another Rh+ baby, the mother’s blood will attack the baby’s blood. The baby may die or become sick. Doctors have to watch the mother and baby carefully in these cases.
