A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury (埋葬) it in the garden and wait for it to flower(开花). A biodegradable (生物可降解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage users to recycle. Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and able to change shape. Overtime it can also break down into the soil without giving out any poisonous(有毒的)chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that includes a sunflower seed .When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms nitrates (硝酸盐). These feed the seed and help the flower grow. Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the cover so far. But we are working with scientists to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time.” said one scientist.
As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are constantly(不断)throwing their mobiles away. This means producers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can change this, according to the scientists.

Hello again. We’re on holiday! My family won a prize – tickets for a round-world-trip on the Freedom of the Seas! Can you believe it? This is one of the biggest cruise(巡游)ships in the world – it‘s huge! It’s as long as 37 buses and can carry more than 4,000 passengers. That’s a lot of people! You know that I like to be very active, so at first I thought this cruise was going to be a little boring … I was so wrong! The ship has an ice-skating rink, an outdoor climbing wall (more than 13 meters high), two swimming pools, a water park and even a boxing ring. But best of all … the Flowrider! It’s a surfing attraction at the top of the ship. I tried it yesterday but I kept falling! I must try again this afternoon. Mom and Dad were also pretty impressed(印象)by the shopping mall on the ship. You’ve really got to see this fantastic ship – it’s truly spectacular(壮观). I’ll write again when I get home (Sunday) and tell you more about the cruise. Bye! Anne |

On a cold December morning, my mother and I were walking home from pizza store. We were served
warmly and equipped with the video we had been trying . I was feeling a little tired I was carrying our shopping bags of snacks and the video.
They were so that I decided to throw away some of them. So I started to walk towards the dustbin when I noticed a poor man stepping out of the restaurant in front of us. He held a paper bag with his dirty hand. He headed for another nearby dustbin and started looking something.
I suddenly felt very upset. I know this man would take all he could get, so I walked up to him and handed the drink and some snacks to him. The man, with lines on his face and wrinkles(皱纹) on his forehead, looked up in and took what I gave him.
A huge smile spread across his face and this made feel indescribable satisfaction(满意). I felt like I couldn’t be happier with myself, but then he said, “Wow, first someone gives me this sandwich, then this drink, and now some tasty food, this is my daughter’s day!”
He thanked me and started off on his bike. I even heard him whistling(吹哨) a song as he
away.
I now understand what is meant by the saying “Giving is getting”. Everyone in the world needs help, everyone can help and everyone will be helped by something kind.
The image(图像) of that man’s happiness caused by my small gift appears in my mind every time I have the chance to do something nice.
