Anne’s best friend
Do you want a friend whom you could tell everything to, like your deepest feeling and thoughts? Or are you afraid of your friend would laugh at you, or would not understand what you are going through. Anne Frank wanted the first kind. She made her diary her best friend.
Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War Ⅱ .Her family wad Jewish so they had to hide or they would be caught by German Nazis(纳粹). They hid away for twenty-five months before they were discovered. During that time the only true friends was her diary. She said, “I don’t want to set down a series of facts as most people do. But I want this diary itself to be my best friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty. Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place since July 1942.
Thursday 15th June 1944
Dear Kitty,
I wonder if it’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the songs of the bird, moonlight and flower could never have kept me spellbound. That’s changed since I came here.
…for example, one evening when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by myself. But as the moon gave far too much light, I didn’t dare open the window. Another time five month ago, I happened to be upstairs when at dusk when the window was open. I didn’t go downstairs until the window had to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a year and a half that I‘d seen the night face to face….
…Sadly…I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtain before very dusty window. It’s no pleasure looking at nature through these any longer, because nature is one thing really must be experienced.
Yours,
Anne

A Student Budget(预算)
College is an exciting time to learn and to make friends that will last a lifetime. Many students do not like to worry about money, and they would rather not think about it. But, it doesn’t matter whether a student’s parents pay for everything, or whether the students works part-time to help pay for his or her education. All students can get into money t__1.__ if they’re not careful.
The cost of a college education can be quite expensive. In English-speaking countries, the a_2.__ cost per student per year is well over US$10,000. Students must also pay for books, paper, pens, and etc. T3._ can cost $500 to $1,000 per year. Students who live in university housing pay thousand more per year for room and board. Add money for clothes, travel, and other personal expenses, and the cost of one year at a university can be $20, 000 to $30,000 or more.
Students need to spend their money c__4._. At most universities, advisors can give students advice on how to budget their money. They s_5.__ this: at the start of a school term, write down your income; for example, money you will get from your family or a part-time job. Then, list all of your expenses. Put your expenses into two groups: those that change (food, phone, books, travel), and those that will stay the s__86__ (tuition, room and board). Add together all of your expenses. Are they more than your income? Do you have enough money, or do you need more?
Learning not to spend more money than you have is not always easy. But for many, it is e6. than borrowing money from family or friends.
My Unexpected Teacher
One cold, rainy evening last October, I was going to interview an old lady in the hospital to gather information for my medical thesis(论文).
The old lady was lying on bed 4B. I sat down on a chair next to her bed, and in a low voice I introduced myself and asked how she was doing. She _replied that she was getting better. When I told her that I wanted to gather some information from her, she agreed.
After I finished the questionnaire, I prepared to leave so I could get more medical records. Before I could get up, the old lady spoke up in her _voice, “I haven’t seen you before, Doctor. Are you new?”
“Not really, ma’ma. It’s just that I don’t come here every day,” I replied. She started _, asking where I was from and why I was working so late in the evening. I was surprised someone in her condition would want to talk.
“Doctor, do you think I can get back to my normal life?” the old lady asked at one point.
I replied that while I didn’t know much about her case, I could tell her what I had learnt about the recovery of the patients of her kind. However, I was unwilling to go into too much detail _I was only a medical student.
The old lady started talking about herself. She shared her difficulties and sufferings, talked about her husband, who was killed in a car accident, and her struggle to earn money. All I did was to nod my head as a way of showing my sympathy(同情).
_, I discovered that the old lady had been allowed to go out of the hospital as her condition had improved, though she would still need treatment.
The old lady taught me one of the most important _ a doctor can learn. Sometimes patients do not need expensive treatment. They just need someone with the patience and willingness to lend an ear to them and spend some time to be with them.

High Housing Cost Makes Sub-Divided Flats
HONG KONG—Average home price have increased by73% since the end of 2008.This huge jump in home price has pushed more and more low income families into sub-divided flats.
What is a sub-divided flat? It is a flat that is divided into parts, so that it can house more than one family. Many sub-divided flats do not meet fire-safety standards (标准).For example, some flat owners have turned fire escape exits into part of their own rooms.
In June 2011, a fire happened in an old eight-storey building and left four people dead. That building was filled with sub-divided flats, some as small as 100 square feet. Many people believed that sub-divided flats were one of the causes for the accident. Since then, the government has paid more attention to the housing problem.
The best way to lower housing prices is to increase the number of flats; however, the best way may not be the easiest way. To lower housing prices, the government said that 20,000 new flats must be added every year for the next ten years.
Even if government could provide land for 20,000 flats a year, we would not know how much that would affect the housing market. One thing is for certain, Hong Kong’s housing problem will not soon go away and will be with us for a very long time.
