Chris is not a traditional explorer(探险者) ----he usually works in an office for a large organization(组织机构). Yet his job can sometimes be as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer.

Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders(无国界医生). MSF sends trained doctors all over the world to help people after a war or a disaster(灾难). Chris is a doctor from France who has travelled to many places to organize programmes that help people.

At present, there are over 27,000 trained medical staff taking part in MSF projects and tasks(任务). The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be prepared to go almost anywhere in the world and ,of course, they should expect difficult conditions. Doctors with experience in tropical(热带的) diseases are especially useful because most of MSFs work is in Africa. When MSF accepts a doctor for a task, he has to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency task(紧急任务) following a disaster, such as an earthquake.

But why would a doctor leave a comfortable life and a good salary(薪水) to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience you get is a great help in your profession. Besides, just like the explorers of the past, you need to keep an open mind and learn to mix well with the people you meet. Most importantly, at the end of each task, you have made a real difference to peoples lives.

1.When does MSF send trained doctors all over the world to help people ?

2.How many medical staff are taking part in MSF projects and tasks?

3.What kind of doctors are greatly needed in Africa?

4.Why is an MSF doctor’s job exciting and dangerous as well?

5.Translate the underlined sentence into proper Chinese

Dear Annie,

Ive never written a letter to a newspaper before, I have just never felt the need to do such a thing. I have always felt I was quite able to do everything by myself,   1.  .

Sometimes you really need help in life, I guess. And thats why Im writing this letter to you.

I have a happy family. I love my children and they love me. Im a mother of three children. I know well how to bring up(养大) children, and two of them are already over twenty, so it is nothing new for me.

But now I have a serious problem: the Internet problem. My little son is just sixteen, and I feel he should do a lot of homework now,   2.  . He can happily spend six or eight hours at a time on the Internet every day. He chats with people that he has never met before,   3.  . He does lots of meaningless things on the Internet. And he sees red(大怒) if you ask him to do his homework.

I just want him to be a good student. Now he seldom does his lessons at home. Im afraid he will drop behind in his class soon. His father is a doctor, a very kind man.   4.  .

What can I do? And dont tell to talk to him. Weve tried that and it didnt work. But this is really a big problem in our family. I have tried everything I can think of.    5.  . You are my last hope. Please tell me what I can do!

Yours,

Ellen Smith

Life is like a train ride. We get on. We ride. We get off. We get back on and ride some more. There are accidents and there are delays(延误).At certain stops, there are surprises. Some of these will change into great moments of joy; some will result in bad results.

When we are born and we first get on the train, we meet people who we think will be with us for the whole journey. Those people are our parents. Sadly, this is far from the truth. Our parents are with us when we completely need them. They, too, have journeys they must complete. We live on with the memories of their love, support and so on.

There are others who get on the train and who finally become very important to us. These people are our brothers, sisters and friends, whom we will learn to love and take care of.

Some people regard their journey as a pleasant tour. They will just go happily along. Others will encounter many upsets, tears and losses(失落)on their journey. Some others will stay on to offer a helping hand to anyone in need.

Some people on the train will leave a deep impression(印象) when they get off. Some will get on and get off the train so quickly that they will hardly leave a sign.

We will sometimes be upset that some passengers, whom we love, will choose to sit in another compartment(车厢) and leave us to travel on our own. Then again, there’s nothing that says we can’t look for them anyway. But when we find them, we may not even be able to sit next to them because that seat will already be taken.

That’s okay… everyone’s journey will be filled with hopes, dreams, challenges, difficulties and goodbyes.

D. Some people won’t leave an impression on other travelers.
