Managing(管理) money is an important skill for adults. But a group of middle school students in the US have had some early lessons.On Sept 23, eighth-graders from Honey Creek Middle School in Michigan, US, had an eye opening experience called Let’s Get Real. The event aimed to help students use money properly.
“I didn’t know it costs so much money just in a month,” said Douglas Dillon, one of the students. Like other students, Dillon acted as a 28-year-old adult with a job and family. He chose to be an engineer. He could earn $5,000 (30,600 yuan) per month. But after he spent his income on essentials (必需品), including housing, taxes (税), transportation, childcare and entertainment (娱乐活动), he only had $347 left. “I really should spend it carefully and not waste it,” said Dillon.
Meanwhile,Braxton Scamihorn,another student from Honey Creek learned a greater appreciation (感激) for his parents and what it takes to pay the bills. The 14-year-old found that “kids cost a lot of money” when he learned that childcare for three children would cost $900 a month.
“It is just a necessary lesson on problems that the teens are going to face when they are about 28 years old,” said Peggy Murdoch, one of the organizers. They hoped the students learned about real life budget (预算) decisions and had more respect for their parents.

One day in 1999, a Chinese man was having lunch in a US restaurant. Suddenly, the word “Alibaba” came into his mind. Of course we made many mistakes, but we never gave up hope,” Ma said.
Ma’s business is not only focused on e-commerce. Alibaba has a large stake (股份) in Sina Weibo and Youku Tudou. He’s also on the board of China’s most successful soccer club, Guangzhou Evergrande.
Now, Ma is dreaming even bigger. “We have a dream. We hope in the next 15 years that the world changes because of us,” he said.

On the first day of my sixth grade, I saw one little girl called Amy on the school bus. “Don’t talk to her,” said Lauren, who sat beside me, “or they will laugh at you.” Amy had many physical differences—lots of reasons for other kids to her. Her eyes weren’t straight. Her glasses were too big. And she had really teeth.
