Dear Mom and Dad,

The time has come: I’m graduating, and I thank you both for all your help during these 15 years. I still remember when you used to say, “You can be whatever you want”. I’m so glad you are my parents, especially when I hear kids say they don’t get on well with theirs. I’m glad that you support me when I decide to do anything. You always try to help, and that’s important to me .

Dad, I remember when you first took me fishing. I loved going even though I never caught anything. I also remember when you would get angry with me. I realize you were only trying to show me the right way. When I would cry, you would always be there to try to cheer me up. That’s what I call a good, loving, caring dad. Sometimes you and Mom don’t agree with me, but you are there by my side in anything that I do, and that’s why I love you both so much.

Mom, I enjoy going out with you and having our happy time every Friday night, and I hope that never changes. I love telling you everything; the best part about you is that you listen. Thank you for bringing me up.

Love always,

Even if you are a good high-jumper, you can jump only about seven feet off the ground. You cannot jump any higher because the earth pulls you hard. The pull of the earth is called gravity.

You can easily find out the pull of the earth. If you weigh yourself, you will know how much gravity is pulling you.

Since there is gravity, water runs down hill. When you throw a ball into the air, it falls back down. Because of gravity, you do not fall off the earth as it whirls (旋转) around.

Then, can we get away from the earth and go far out into space? Now you can do it, because spaceships have been invented. Then spaceship will go so fast that it can escape (逃出) the earth’s gravity and carry you into space.

There is a Chinese proverb(谚语), “I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand.” Do you know it? Maybe you will say, “Sorry, I don’t.” But you will see this proverb on the walls of classroom in an American middle school. Many Americans think it is the truth of learning.

What does this proverb tell us? Practice! When you are learning a text, if you just listen to your teacher and do nothing, you will forget it quickly; if you read it several times, you will remember it; but if you preview the text before class and solve some problems yourself, you will understand it.

When we have formed good study habits, we learn things quickly and remember things easily. Do you sometimes copy other’s homework? It is not good. No matter how difficult the homework is, you must try to do it by yourself and finish it on time. If you practice again and again, nothing will be difficult.

When you are having classes, don’t forget to take notes. Every evening you must take out the notes and review what you have learned today. Before doing homework, do not forget to clean your desks. A clean desk will make you feel comfortable.

A good study habit is the key to success.
