A short Chinese man is one of the biggest man in the world right now. He is Ma Yun, the Chairman of Alibaba Group. On Sept,19,2014 Alibaba went public(上市) and raised 25 billion dollars. Ma, a former English teacher, has become the richest man in China.
Bora in 1964 in Hangzhou, Zhejian, Ma grew up as a happy kid. When he was a teenager, he wanted to learn English. Every morning, he got up at 5 a.m rode his bike for 40 minutes to a hotel near the West Lake and talked with foreigner tourists in English. He did it for nine years, rain or shine.
The experience made him an excellent English speaker and also opened his eyes to the outside world. In 1994, Ma heard about Internet for the first time. And on a trip in 1995 to the US, Ma was shown in Internet for the first time. He searched the word “beer” on Yahoo, and found that there was nothing there about China. Seeing the chance, Ma returned to China and set up a website called China Pages without even knowing much about computers.
Four years later, Ma, his wife and his friends set up Alibaba in Hangzhou. He believed in the Internet business potential(潜力) when few other Chinese did. 15 years later, developed into the world’s largest e-commerce company(电子商务公司),owning popular shopping websites like Taobao and Tmall.

The Silk Road wasn’t actually a road. It was not even a single route(路线)。
The Silk Road was a name given to any route that led across China to Rome. Nobody knows when the Silk Road first connected China to the west for sure. But we think and learn that it was made about during the Han dynasty (BC206-AD220). The Silk Road covered the distance of about 7,000 kilometers. The Silk Road wasn’t actually one road. It was actually many roads that ran through different countries. The roads linked(连接) China to Rome. They ran through high mountains and the harsh(严酷的) deserts.
How many different towns, cities or countries do you think there were along the Silk Road? Nobody knows exactly how many towns, cities or countries there were. But some of the countries were China, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria. There were three main routes, and they were very dangerous. The northern route was from China to the Black Sea. The central route was from China to Persia, the Mediterranean Sea(地中海) and Rome. The last route, the southern route, was from China to Iran and India. It was very necessary for merchants(商人) to trade their goods from China to the west.
