When Archie was walking alone through the town, he found a stranger with a big frown(皱眉). The man looked at Archie unhappily, which made Archie a little angry. So Archie frowned back at him. Then the man ran away in surprise.
While Archie was walking alone, he looked at the people around him. He found that no one seemed happy and that most of them frowned. Archie didn’t know why so many people frowned at each other while passing through the town.
Then a clever idea came into Archie’s head. He would not wear a frown. Instead, he would smile. Although it seemed funny at first, he gave it a try. Archie smiled at the people who were walking past him. And to his surprise, most of them smiled back. Archie thought his idea was great. Everybody seemed happier because of the smile of a clever young boy.

Most of us have known cola is bad for teeth. It can also cause a heavier body and weaker bones(骨骼). American scientists found another bad thing about cola: It’s bad for our bones, especially women’s bones.
Well, if cola is bad for us, you may want other popular drinks, for example, energy drinks(功能饮料).
Energy drinks look cool. Their makers say they give you energy and make you better at sports. So, many students drink them before exams to help them stay awake.
But wait. To keep you awake, most energy drinks have a lot of caffeine(咖啡因). They are like a strong cup of coffee or tea. If you drink a lot of them, your heart will beat faster. You will feel nervous. You could also have sleeping problems and find it hard to live without them.
Amanda Smith is a 16-year-old US junior high school student. She drinks one or more energy drinks every day. She started to do this a year ago before dance class. But now, Smith says, “I drink them whenever I feel weak or before a test. I cannot help drinking them.”
The energy you get from the drinks helps for only a short time. You may feel good for an hour or so, but then you’ll feel worse than before.

Ding-Dong!
“Jason, honey? Can you answer the door?”
“I am busy, mom!” Jason shouted back at his mother. He had spent three hours so far working to this point in the game. He couldn’t stop now.
Ding-Dong! Mom′s footsteps approached the front door.
“Jason, it’s your friend Todd.” Mom called from the doorway.
Todd, his best friend, stepped into the room. “ Jason!I need a partner for playing basketball. ”He sounded excited.
Jason snorted. “No way, Todd. I’m playing a game here.” Jason gave his friend a dirty look, and his character in the game almost got killed while he looked away, “ I almost died because of you!”
Todd looked at Jason’s mother. Jason’s mother looked back at him. They both looked at Jason. “Why don’t you play basketball with your friend?” Jason’s mother suggested.
“Tomorrow, maybe…” There were more levels to beat tomorrow, though. Maybe he’d play tomorrow. He’d have to see what mood he was in. He thought he heard footsteps walking away, but he was too busy beating the next level to care.
An hour later, Jason’s father came home. It was dinner time after his father washed up and sat down. Jason didn’t even hear his name being called to the table. He didn’t hear his father walk up behind him and ask him to turn the game off, either.
When the screen suddenly went black and his father’s angry face loomed in front of him, Jason finally heard. “No more game for a month.” Jason’s father shouted at him “You don’t play basketball, you don’t come to dinner, and you don’t do your chores. We’ll make sure everything else gets done before you play any more.”
Jason nodded(点头)slowly. He knew better than to argue with his father, and when he thought about it, he had been playing quite a bit. It was fun, but he was letting down(使失望) his friends, his family, and himself by playing too much.
He’d try harder in the future.

Dear Disney,
Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom—Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.
We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn't take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff (员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, “Promise?” Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria’s new friend with “her” ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won’t last
twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride; she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, “Thank you,” but I’m sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!
Your fan,
Carmen Rivera
