All living things on the earth need other living things to live on. Nothing lives alone. Most animals must live in a group, and even a plant grows close together with others of the same kind. Sometimes one living thing kills another, one eats and the other is eaten. Each kind of life eats another kind of life in order to live, and together they form a food chains (链). Some food chains are simple, while others are not. But all food chains begin with the sun, and all food chains become broken up if one of the links disappears (消失).

All the lives need sunlight to survive. But only plants can use sunlight directly. Plants are “factories”. They make food from sunlight, water and things in the soil and air.

Plants feed all other living things. Animals can only use the sun’s energy after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.

What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat wheat, rice, vegetables, fruits and so on. We also eat meat and drink milk. But men often break up the food chains. They kill wild animals and make the rivers, lakes, and seas dirty. When these rivers, lakes and seas are polluted, the fish in them cannot be eaten. If men eat the fish, they will get strange diseases.

Each form of life is linked to all the others. Breaking the links puts all life in danger.

You must hear about earthquakes, but do you know what to do during and after an earthquake? Here is some advice (建议) for you:

Before an earthquake. It is necessary to prepare yourself and your family. All family members should know how to turn off gas, water and electricity and know useful telephone numbers (doctor, hospital, police, 119, etc). Never put heavy things over beds.

During the earthquake. It’s important to for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place in the room such as under a strong desk or a strong table. It can protect yourself from falling things. Stay away from windows, large mirrors, heavy things and so on. If you are cooking, turn off the gas.

If you are outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Move away from buildings, bridges and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible. Stay in your car.

After an earthquake. Once the shaking stops, do not run out of the building at once. It’s better to wait and leave when it is safe.

Check around you and help the people in trouble. If your building is badly broken, you should leave it. If you smell or hear gas, get someone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas. Repeat it to the gas company.

Maybe you know floods, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have you heard of typhoons?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发)into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles (圆圈) and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts, one is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. Here are the strongest winds and hardest rains.

Typhoons are very dangerous. In November, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan killed 5500 people in Philippines. More people are missing.

What to do when a typhoon hits?

Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.

Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!

Listen to the radio or TV for important information.
