Because of different reasons, I could neither go abroad nor attend a language course to improve my English．So, I finally d to read books in English．I chose Irving’s novel A widow for One Year．
What was my experience like? Very challenging（有挑战性的）! At the b , I tried to stop thinking in Chinese about what I was reading．I just kept reading i of looking up the new words in the dictionary．At first it seemed to be i to read and understand without using a dictionary, but then I began to get the meaning s ．Finally, I was so interested in the wonderful characters and the surprising plot of the novel t I completely forgot that I was reading the book in English.
R this novel was very good for my English learning．I found that Irving’s way of writing was very clear and easy to reaD． This made me feel really satisfied and encouraged me to read m other books (not only by Irving)．I discovered that when you read a book in English you will stop thinking in your mother tongue at some point．It’s just as if you were there, inside the story, among the characters who speak English in the book.
Reading Irving’s novel also enabled me to learn a large n of new words and expressions used in different contexts．It is really a good w to improve our English.
In classes, your teachers will talk about topic that you are studying．The information they provide will be important for you to know when you take tests．So you must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say.
Here are the three stages(阶段) of taking notes and what you should do during each stage.
1.Before Class
Review your notes you have taken before you come to class．This will be good for remembering what was covereD． Get you ready to understand new information your teacher will provide.
2.During Class
Keep your attention on what your teacher is saying and ‘the signal words’ that tell you what your teacher is going to say and it is important to write in your notes．Examples of signal words are ‘The most important point…’and ‘Remember that…’ Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or writes on the blackboarD． Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes．Do this by writing abbreviations such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences.
3.After Class
Rewrite your notes to make them more complete and accurate (准确的) by changing abbreviations into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences．Use them to answer your questions．If necessary, ask your teacher for help.

I was very sleepy in the morning, so I didn’t go running as usual．At nine o’clock, Tom called me to join him in a game of basketball．He said Jack and some other boys would also be there too．I had finished my homework and had nothing else to do so I agreeD． Tom told me to go to the basketball club at ten o’clock.
