Some people believe that your nationality(国籍) can influence your personality. This is why you might hear someone saying “She is a typical(典型的) Australian” or “He is so French”. It seems that people from a certain country share certain similar characteristics.
French French people are often seen as romantic and outgoing people with a great love for life, food and wine. They are good at singing and dancing.
Chinese Chinese are friendly people who are hard-working. They are polite because they are careful about “saving face” when dealing with other people.
Australians Australians are merry people who spend a lot of time outdoors. They enjoy a slower life. They laugh a lot but sometimes people think they are loud and rude.
Germans Germans are often described as being serious and careful. They are hard workers and pay a lot of attention to details. However, sometimes people say Germans are not humorous.
All these national types can be true for some people, but very wrong for others. For example, you might meet a German who is a confident singer with a great sense of humor, or an Australian who is shy and quiet!

Do you obey the rules in your school? What do you think of your school rules? Are you allowed to dye (染) hair? A lot of school rules are similar around the world, but some are different. Some students may enjoy more freedom in some countries. But freedom doesn’t mean “no rules”. Every school has its own rules.
There are some rules in Japanese schools. The students are not allowed to dye their hair and are supposed to keep their hair black. They are not allowed to wear earrings either. Almost all schools used to require students to wear school uniforms but now half of the schools require uniforms. The students feel happy to wear all kinds of clothes. The students must get to school on time. If they are late, they cannot get into the school because the school gate is closed. In Japan, students are not allowed to have part-time jobs.
American schools have their own rules too. For example, at Morton High School, students are not allowed to choose their own clothes. They must get to school or leave school on time. Food, drinks or snacks shouldn’t be taken into the classroom. They must wear sports shoes in PE class. They are supposed to keep quiet on the school bus. In America, the students can have part-time jobs in their free time. (选自《课课练》九上)

Do you know why different animals or pests(害虫) have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves. Some birds like eating locusts(蝗虫),but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by their enemies (敌人). So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the tree.
Have you ever noticed an even stranger act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid(液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, the enemies cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it isn’t strong at all.
