At one time, howeverHenry Bond was about ten years old when his father died. His mother found it difficult to provide for the support of a large family, but still everything was left in her care. By good management, however, she tried to do well and also to send Henry, the oldest, to school, and to supply him, for the most part, with such books as he needed.
, Henry wanted a grammar book, in order to join a class in that study, and his mother could not help him with the money to buy it. He was very worried about it, and went to bed with a heavy heart thinking what could be done.
On waking in the morning, he found that a deep snow had fallen, and the cold wind was blowing strongly. “Ah,” said he, “it is an ill wind that blows nobody good.”
He rose, ran to house of a neighbour, and offered his service to clear a path around his houses. The offer was accepted. Having completed this work, and received his pay, he went to another place for the same purpose, and then to another, until he had earned enough money to buy a grammar book.
When school began, Henry was in his seat, the happiest boy there, ready to begin the lesson in his new book.
From that time, Henry was always the first in all his classes. He knew no such word as fail, but was always successful in all he had tried.

Do you know Chai Jing? She is a former news hostess from CCTV. Recently, her latest documentary Under the Dome(穹顶之下)has aroused wide public attention. As we all know, smog is a big problem in many Chinese cities.
The 103-minute film was published on websites on Feb 28, 2015. In the film, Chai visits polluted places and talks to officials(官员) and scientists. She says that burning too much coal and oil is the main cause of PM2.5 and smog.
To make things worse, according to Chai, the coal and oil we are burning is of poor quality and don’t meet the standards for environmental protection, Therefore they have produced more harmful gas and particles(颗粒)to pollute the air.
To solve the problem, Chai suggests that factories should clean our coal and oil or replace them with cleaner energy.
In her film, Chai also thought that ordinary people can do something to help control smog too. For example, we can live a greener life by using more public transportation or if we see something that could harm the environment, we can try to stop it.
What can we do to help beat the smog?
*Take public transportation.
*Call the hotline 12369 for complaints about environmental problems.
*Clean the cooking area regularly to avoid extra harmful gas.
*Take a picture of any pollutant source and post it on your social media accounts.
*Add “@local environmental departments” on weibo.
*Don’t buy products made from factories that pollute the environment.
Chen Jinjing, the new minister of environmental protection, praised Chai. He said, “This film encourages us to care more about the environment. This is what we need in the future.”

I hid the long black bag in the garage(车库) for the past two days. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take it away. If everything went OK, it would be done by morning. But I had to be sure no one, not even my wife, saw me.
It was more difficult to get away from the party than I expected. I said that the children were tired and needed to get to bed. It was partly true. But the main reason for leaving was that I wanted to finish my plan.
First I had to get the kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight it was even more difficult. The eldest one wanted to know why we left the party early. I told him 10:30 p.m. was not early. As usual, I read them a bed time story, but I had to stop myself reading too quickly or they would know my secret.
Silence finally came, and feeling like a thief in the night, I went out of the house and into the garage. Taking one end, I dragged the bag out from its hiding place and took it into the garden. I was worried that my neighbours might see me and call the police.
It was already eleven o'clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to make as little noise as possible. And that was not easy with a saw (锯子) and a hammer(锤子).
After much effort, my work was finally completed. I looked down at my watch. It was exactly 4:00 am. Then I went inside to have a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn't be long now before the kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the new tree-house Father Christmas brought them this year.
