Dear Amy,
I couldn’t read your two e-mails until today because my computer was broken. I’m so sorry to hear about your problem, but I’m glad you’re feeling better and are recovering(康复). I’m surprised that in China someone’s liver(肝脏) matched(适合) yours! This is really a moving story—a stranger donated part of his liver to a girl he doesn’t even know!
You’re right. We shouldn’t care too much about our weight. I’m happy you stopped taking medicine to lose weight. From your photo I can see you are now looking very well in the hospital. To keep slim(苗条) is important, especially for an actress, but nothing is more important than health. Your doctor’s advice is really very good—exercise for at least half an hour every day and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.
It’s not only in your country. It’s the same here with us Chinese—many people are always taking medicine to lose weight. That is often dangerous. But in fact, some of them are not overweight(超重) at all. I hope these people can learn something from your story. Hope you will leave hospital as soon as possible.
Love

I was driving home on a very hot afternoon and about to get near a crossing. One of the main traffic lights had gone off, and a police officer was standing in the middle of the busy street to direct(指挥) the traffic. Although he has no hat to keep out of the burning sun, he seemed very happy and was pleased about the job.
I needed to stop at the drugstore(药店) on the corner, and while I was there, I wanted to get some water for the officer. But I had some hesitation(犹豫), since it was uncomfortable for me to interact(交往) with a stranger in this way.
I left, drove halfway home, turned around, went back to the drugstore, got water and then found myself thinking about how to hand it to him in the busy crossing. I knew that he might not be able to take it, but I would like to try.
I drove into the crossing and offered the officer the bottle of water. Though he wasn’t able to take the bottle, he smiled, and said, “Thank you.”
I drove home, feeling good for what I had done. And I even called the police station that afternoon to make sure that they knew what a great job he did that day.
