Every year thousands of young people in England finish school and then take a year off(停学) before they start work or go to university. Some young people go to other countries and work as volunteers. Volunteers give up their time to help people. For example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they do something helpful for the country.
Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to university to study Chinese, but now she’s living in Belize. Pauline says, “These days, I’m working with other people here to save the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is very polluted (污染), the coral dies. I`ll help to do research(调查) on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. We need to do something about the problem before it’s too late.”
“I’m staying with a family here and I help to do some housework. I don’t get any money, but that’s OK. I love my work here, and I’m learning a lot about the people and myself! When I finish my work, I will stay here for another three months because I want to travel around Belize and Central America”

Do you want to be a volunteer? Maybe you need some ideas. Here is some advice.
Help kids learn and grow. Be a big brother or sister at an after-school care center. You can help little kids to learn or play with them.
Give back during the holidays. Serve dinner to the homeless, volunteer at an old people’s home, or give out toys to kids.
Help at an animal shelter (庇护所). Most shelters depend on (依靠) volunteers to keep the cats and dogs happy and take them to exercise. And when you’re walking dogs, you get some exercise, too.
Protect (保护) the environment. Take part in a park clean-up day. Plant a tree. Join a group to work together to protect a river.
Help sick people. Helping others can make you feel good. When you cheer sick people up, you also feel happy. If you have several hobbies, find a way to do them all. For example, if you love kids and are good at painting and dancing, visit a children’s hospital and teach them these interesting things.
