Will there be gardens in space?
Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) recently made history by taking bites of some red romaine lettuce(生菜). They became the first humans to eat food that was grown entirely in space.
The lettuce was planted on the ISS in a small greenhouse called “Veggie”, which uses LED lights to help plants grow in space.
First, astronauts cleaned the lettuce with special sanitizing wipes and then ate it with some salad dressing.
“It was one small bite for man, one giant leap for our journey to Mars,” one astronaut Scott Kelly later posted on social media.
Space vegetables are part of the NASA experiment called “Veg-01”, a study on how plants grow away from the effects of Earth’s gravity. It will allow astronauts to grow and eat their own food during long space explorations.
“If we’re ever going to go to Mars someday, we’re going to need a spacecraft that is much more self-sustainable in its food supply,” said Kelly.
Growing fresh plants on a spacecraft may also provide oxygen and help astronauts alive, NASA said.
“Veg-01” started in May 2014. The first batch of vegetable took 33 days to grow in space before they were taken back to Earth for a safety check.
After making sure it was safe to eat, astronauts planted a second batch on July 8. They let the plant grow for another 33 days and were then able to eat it.
Astronauts usually only get some fruit and vegetables when a supply ship comes to the ISS. Now with the vegetables grown in space, they can eat whenever they want.

When cold winter days seem gloomy (灰暗的), nothing is better than a nice hot pot meal to warm and cheer you up.
Hot pot has a long history. It is the most popular type of food in China, according to a survey by the consumer review website Dianping.com. There are about 350,000 hot pot restaurants around the country, the largest number of any type of restaurant.
While enjoying a hot pot meal, people sit around a table and eat from a steaming pot. They put meat, seafood, vegetables, tofu and bean noodles in the soup to boil. Meat, especially mutton, is often cut as thin as paper, so it should not be cooked too long. Otherwise, it will lose its tenderness (鲜嫩).
There is also a range of soup types to choose from: spicy, mushroom and tomato. Usually a hot pot has two parts inside. One side is spicy, while the other side is not so spicy. So everyone can enjoy eating it how they like.
You don’t have to master great cooking skills to enjoy hot pot either. When the food is ready, take it out and put it in different sauces to give it a special flavor. Some also drink the soup from the pot.
Enjoying hot pot is about more than just eating. While the pot cooks people talk and drink. Unlike some meals, it creates an atmosphere (气氛) where everyone can just relax. No wonder hot pot restaurants have become a favorite reunion spot for friends and family in China.

YEARS ago, a very rich man and his young son shared an interest in collecting art. They traveled around the world, collecting priceless works of art by famous artists like Picasso, Van Gogh and Monet.
The man became very lonely and sad. When war broke out, the son left to serve his country. After a few weeks, the old man received a letter saying his son had died while taking another soldier to a hospital.
One day, a soldier visited the old man and gave him a painting – it was a portrait of his son.
Though the world would never consider it a great work, the painting was important to the man.
The painting of his son became the old man’s most valuable item. He told his neighbors it was the greatest gift he had ever received. The following spring, the old man became ill and passed away.
All of the old man’s paintings would be sold at an auction. The auction began with a painting that was not on any of the buyers’ lists ... it was the painting of the old man’s son.
“Who will open the price at $100 ?” the auctioneer asked. Moments passed and no one spoke or raised their hand. Someone said: “Who cares about that painting? Let’s get on to the good ones.” More voices followed in agreement. “No, we must sell this one first,” replied the auctioneer. “Now, who will take the portrait of the son?”
Finally, a good friend of the old man spoke: “Will you take $10 for the painting? That’s all I have.” “Will anyone go higher?” called the auctioneer. After more silence he said: “Going once ... going twice ... sold!” The auctioneer looked at the crowd and announced that the whole auction was over. “According to the father’s will, whoever takes the son’s portrait gets the whole collection,” the auctioneer said.
