Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They want to bring water into the deserts, so people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the desert in time. Why is more and more land becoming desert? Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth. Some places on the earth don’t get much rain. But they still don’t become deserts. This is because some plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants don’t let the hot sun make the earth even drier. Plants don’t let the wind blow the dirt away. When a little bit of rain falls, the plants hold the water. Without plants, the land can become a desert much more easily.

I’ m getting a warm welcome here,” he guessed.“They saw my games on TV.”
They sat down and then a young man came back and gave out his hand.“Thanks a lot,”said the coach.“I just can’ t believe you know who I am.” “All I know,”replied the man.“Is that they would not show the film until at least ten people bought tickets.”

If you remember the following six ways of information, you’ll know how to protect yourself. You’ll be much safer at school and in your everyday life.
1)Always notice the environment around you. You shouldn’t walk alone out. Make sure where the public phones are. If anything dangerous happens, you can find them quickly.
2)Don’t use earphones when running in the schoolyard or on the street. You will keep yourself from the outside world and can easily get into trouble.
3)When taking a bus, school bags should be carried towards the front of your bodies instead of putting them on your backs. When buses are crowded, it is easy enough for thieves to steal the things in the bag on your back.
4)If you are followed by a stranger, cross the street and go in the other direction. Let the stranger know he or she is there. Next, go and get help from others if it is necessary. Don’t go home directly. You are safer in the street than you are in your home or in a lift.
5)If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop only a few minutes before the buses leave. On buses, don’t sit alone. You should sit behind the driver or with friends. Don’t sleep.
6)Don’t play with matches or candles, because it may cause fire. If your house catches fire and you have to escape through smoke, move on your hands and knees with your head 30-60 centimeters above the floor. Please remember there is cleaner and cooler air near the floor during the fire.

All living things on the earth need other living things to live. Nothing lives alone. Most animals must live in a group, and even a plant grows close together with others of the same kind. Sometimes one living thing kills another. One eats and the other is eaten. Each kind of life eats another kind of life in order to live, and together they form a food chains( 食物链) Some food chains are simple, while others are not. But all food chains begin with the sun, and all food chains become broken up if one of the links disappears.
All life needs sunlight to live on. But only plants can use sun-light directly. Plants are “factories”. They make food from sun-light, water and things in the soil and air.
Plants feed all other living things. Animals can only use the sun’s energy (能量)after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants. Others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.
What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat wheat, rice, vegetable, fruits and so on. We also eat meat and drink milk, but men often break up the food chains. They kill wild animals. They also make rivers, lakes and seas dirty. When these rivers, lakes and seas are polluted, the fish in them can not be eaten. If men eat fish, they will get strange diseases.
Each form of life is liked to all others. Breaking the links puts all life in danger.
